Shanghai - chandlers ?

I don't know Shanghai that well so you might get more up to date info from a Shanghainese resident - however I suspect you would get little in the way of deck gear here in China. AFIK most of the equipment used on pleasure craft here is imported and will cost much more in China than in the UK or USA.

You can get sailing clothing here. A mate of mine in HK used to buy Musto or Henri Lloyd gear in the Xiushui Silk Market (pron: Shoe Shway) here in Beijing. The problem is that unless you know the product and the vendors well you will probably be sold rip-off copies that will fall to bits very quickly.

If you are knowlegable or lucky you might get what is known as "cabbage" in the trade. This is the over-run of the genuine article made to order for export. The excess should be destroyed but it often gets out of the back door and then is sold off cheaply through markets and shops known as "factory outlets." Ask your local contacts where these are in Shanghai.

I hope this doesn't sound too negative but in China the first and only rule is "buyer beware."

In Beijing there is a branch of the French Decathalon sports gear chain. They have some sailing gear which should be the genuine article made to French specs and QC. From memory a mid weight waterproof jacket was the equivalent of 30 or 40 pounds sterling. It might be worth checking if there is a branch in Shanghai.

BTW if you are in Shanghai in early April there is a boat show which might be worth a visit. Details here Shanghai2008

Re: Shanghai - chandlers ? Correct URL

Unlikely you will find anything in Shanghai. There is virtually no pleasure boating in China and I have never seen any chandler type shops. Although much of the gear sold in Europe is made in either China or other Eastern countries, it is either shipped straight out or is in component form (for example China is the major source of stainless castings and fabrications) for assembly or packaging elsewhere.

As Tyga says, there are factory outlets selling surplus production and I have seen yachting type clothing in such places in Guangzhou but not in any volume.

Re: Shanghai - chandlers ? Correct URL

I have spent a bit of time in Shanghai over the past three years and failed to find much of use to a sailor. I tried everywhere to find the Astro sextant, made in China, at a plastic sextant price. Just for the pleasure of having a real sextant to play with. One instrument shop offered to get one but at the same price as over here.

I also looked at gauges in 2-300 kilo size to measure anchor pull but they were big money.

There is a lot of Gore tex about but not ever had any genuine, not sure of the effectiveness standard It is good value for a set of 'warm waterpoofs' for 30 to 40 quid.

As was said - buyer beware
