Hi All, I have a Bow Fairlead that has been used as a paper weight & was wondering if any one could shed some light on it,s history as my inquizative son asked me about it. It is bronze in colour mounted on wood & has inscribed on the top
BOW FAIRLEAD
"SHAMROCK" 23 METER
FYFEE BUILT
E.LEPARD

all help would be apprciated as I said to my son he could have it to sell if it might be worth any thing?

This was a large cutter built for Sir Thomas Lipton, the only one of his yachts that did not compete for the America's Cup. If you really want to sell I would be interested.

"Shamrock 23 metres"

How big is that bow fairlead?

Sir Thomas Lipton owned six sailing yachts all called "Shamrock" and a large steam yacht whose name I forget but which might have been "Eira".

All the "Shamrock"s were painted green.

"Shamrock"s "I" to "V" were America's Cup challengers. "Shamrock V" survives today.

"Shamrock" - no number, but known to her professional crew as "Shamrock 23 metres" was his "regular" British racing yacht, which he kept for many years and campaigned on the British racing circuit. She was so called because she was built to the IYRU 23 metre rule. She was particularly noted for always turning out against the King's "Britannia", causing the Kaiser to remark on "my uncle going boating with his grocer".
