Hi!
Don't know about the mast shaking, but if it's a 'humming' sound, it is, as many have said, likely to be the topping lift. No need for towels, wet or dry though!
Just take the end of your mainsheet, tie a rolling hitch on to the topping lift a couple of feet up from the boom and let the rest of the mainsheet straight hang down to the deck/coachroof. This completely dampens the vibration so, no more noise - job done!
