Have 32 Bayliner with 150 Hino diesel. Starboard shaft seems to be noiser lately as in "metal to metal" I fear cutlass bearing in my future! Q: with boat in water is there are clues, signs, methods for pinpointing this? I know haulout and prop-end exam is normal procedure..but am trying to save time. Hurth trans. seems fine..fluid up...shifts fine...noise seems to be after that.

get the wetsuit on dive over the side, give the shaft a shake side to side, if the sideways movement is morethan 4mm, or you can feel/hear an audible clonk then the cutlass bearing is shot, you dont happen to have spurs or shaft knives fitted do you, if they come loose they make a racket as well, hope its not expensive cheers keith

Mark and split the gearbox / shaft coupling and run engine. If no noise the problem is cutlass or rope cutters if fitted. Also check gland packing. If its run dry then it could be the packing burning the shaft.

ChrisP ;o)
