Shackle thread sealant?

We're using two hex pin shackles on the anchor/warp/chain and they work well in not jamming in the stemhead, winch or hawse pipe. The only niggle I have is the fact the pins can't be moused, and when new the threads are a little slack until tightened. It may be they will never come loose, but I'd be happier if the thread was "locked" in some way. I've tried two ideas: a) Loctitie thread lock sealant b) PTFE pipe thread tape (the white stuff plumbers use). Both seem viable solutions, but have others used similar or other methods I wonder? Sikaflex or epoxy resin would probably work as well, but might be rather difficult (or impossible) to undo if necessary. Thoughts anyone?

Traditional way was to use a hammer. A little GBH on the end of the thread sorted it out.
I use Loctite on engines etc but I don't know if it OK to use on something that will be immersed in water.

I wouldn't worry about not being able to undo the shackle. Get a new one if necessary.

PTFE is a No No as it only provides a seal and does not lock the thread. I suggest talking to Loctite but in the meantime here is a possible thread lock which is permanent and is chemical resistant.

Loctite® 2701 - Maximum Strength (improved Loctite® 270)

For use on all metal fasteners (including stainless steels and those with protective coatings such as zinc) where regular removal for maintenance is not required. Recommended for permanently locking studs on engine blocks and pump housings.

Applications
All fasteners that must withstand heavy shock, vibration, or extreme environmental or chemical conditions.

I went for a 3 stage approach:
1. Loctite 270 on thread.
2. Tighten up hard.
3. Bruise threads.

Hopefully no chance of the shackle working free but will need a hacksaw if I want to remove it /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hubby stood shackles on side on metal block. With good centre punch and heavy hammer drove punch into joint of shackle and thread of pin. This created a small divot that has locked the thread permanently. With real extreme effort, good vice and tools - he should be able to unscrew it again if ever needed.

Try Rocol oil seal from any good plummers merchant.
You paint it on the threads and it sets solid in a few hours.
This is not to be confused with the tape type.
You can break it with a 'lot of force' but should do what you want.

I used araldite. The only way to undo it though, will be bolt croppers.

A little heat will soften the araldite and the shackle can be easily undone.Boltcroppers seem a bit excessive .But you're right araldite is good for this purpose.I would use a high grade Locticte.Water won't affect it.

Thank to all who've helped here. I'll check which Loctite product I've used and try undoing one I sealed some weeks back. That should give an indication. Yes heat will significantly weaken epoxy, so I might try that on an old shackle and see what happens. The PTFE tape idea does have some merit IMHO, as although it doesn't lock the thread as such, it's very stiff to undo and won't I think come loose by vibration or the action of the chain link on the pin. However, I do agree that a proper thread lock product is probably the way to go.
