Last night I was about to fasten the clew outhaul to my main, got everything lined up, and dropped the pin. It bounced once on the deck before executing a perfect dive into the ocean.
I went to my spares box, got a new shackle and completed the job.
Is it wrong that I now have a collection of shackle bodies with missing pins in my spares box?

I blame the chandlers personally as they only ever sell them as a set.

There is a lot to be said for captive pin shackles especially for ones that are used frequently. Ideally captive to the halyard/control line with a captive pin that cannot get loose.

Most shackle pins have a hole in the end. I have never done it but it might be a good idea to tie a little line from the body of the shackle to the pin's head especially for shackles that are installed while over water

I've also dropped them overboard. Shackle pins tend to be unique the to body - you will be lucky to get one that fits properly and has the same characteristics - unless it is from the same manufacturer.

Buy a new shackle, use soft shackles (as GHA suggests) and captive pins are also a good idea - now sounds like a good time to change :)

Well yes my chandler has pins available. However I am a real bodger I would fit a set screw to a shackle especially the 4mm size. I use a thread tap if the thread in the shackle doesn't match the shackle. Yes often you get a thread section taking the load not good but often ok. Yes I drilled holes in the shackle pins of training boats and attached string to the pin and tied to the shackle. As said if you operate the shackle a lot use a captive pin type. good luck olewill

Metric pins/bolts will screw into BSF shackles if you have big enough spanners. (Worth keeping in mind)
