The SH GX2100 VHF/AIS would appear to have all the features I want (good radio, built in AIS with DSC calling from the screen and a good remote mic), but it does not support NMEA2000, and I would prefer an all NMEA2000 system. Has anyone used an Actisense NGW-1-ISO-AIS with a GX2100 outputting AIS to a NMEA 2000 chartplotter and receiving GPS from it? Looking at the Actisense website it should work, but I would be interested if anyone has actually done it successfully.

Thanks

Neil

GX2100 has 3 NMEA data streams:-
GPS to GX2100 at 4,800
AIS from GX2100 at 38,400
DSC messages from GX2100 at 4,800

It seems that the NGW-1 will handle one stream in each direction - probably treats them as one port, so they would operate at the same speed. Therefore to fully connect to NMEA2000 it might be necessary to have one NGW-1 that would handle GPS & DSC sentences at 4,800, and another one to handle AIS sentences at 38,400.

A 4800 to 38400 converter could be made for not much if there's any interest.

The GX2100's two talkers and one listener could be multiplexed together into one high speed port [bi-directional]. Then just one NGW-1 would be needed. Could a multiplexer be made with an NMEA2000 output itself?

I sent an email to Actisense last night and got a reply today, which more or less confirmed what has been said above - the NGW-1-ISO-AIS would do the conversions, but only works at one speed, which would have to be 38400 for the AIS to work. A low cost mux to take the bi-directional 4800 port and the omni-directional 38400 port and feed them into the NGW-1 at 38400 would be of interest. I am in no real rush - I will probably buy the Lowrance HDS-8M chart plotter soon, in the knowledge that there are a number of potential solutions for connecting to a GX2100 available in the future (ranging from direct 0183 to 0183, which I don't want to do, to using some form of convertor).

Thanks

Neil
