There's one thread on this from 2013 that wasn't particularly complimentary about the ability of the internal GPS to get a fix. Anyone else out there got experience of this good or bad. I know I can connect an external GPS feed but that is what I am trying to avoid. This unit is currently top of my pick list if it works. I don't need the AIS capability of the higher spec ones. The unit would be mounted close to the roof of a wheelhouse in a trawler style mobo.

There's another thread about the HX2200E, which suggests that GPS reception below decks is OK. I'd imagine the GPS engine is the same in the two sets.

I have a GX1700e. It gets a GPS fix quickly, I have had no problems with it at all.

Thanks for that. I was hoping that would be the case. My ipad gets a very quick fix with its (presumably) tiny GPS aerial. Next step is measure the space and then a quick call to Mum to explain that I now do know what I want for my birthday!
