That'll be because you're using the back bedroom for your frolic, and this location is sited far from the centre of bouyancy. What happens is that the frequency of oscillation of the reciprocating parts is a harmonic of the boat bobbing frequency. Thus, the input from the sports enthusiasts is amplified rather than damped, and transferred to the vessel. In extreme cases this can result in the participants being thrown from the bunk and slammed against the deckhead, with ardour-dampening consequences.

There are two ways to avoid this. Firstly, use the saloon table instead, which being positioned just above what Bavaria Yachts laughingly call a keel will avoid your harmonic lever arm transferring motion to the ocean. But beware. On a Bav 34 this may result in splinters of plywood entering into the 'equation', and Bavaria will not entertain warranty claims for new tables (nor will they for new anchors, as I believe you have recently ascertained).

Alternative, proceed as currently but, as they say on the signs at either end of Albert Bridge "Break step".

For those without an imtimate knowledge of the miltary, this instruction is to prevent the brutal and licentious making the traditional manly 'left-right-left-right' progression across the bridge and inducing it to sway and tremble. Instead, they are required to mince across like a load of ballet dancers. The same practise should therefore be followed when engaged in horizontal folk dancing in the Bav, viz - don't do it in a regular rhythm (see also under Catholic Church, Rhythm Method). Rather, like an avant guard composer, keep changing the number of beats to the bar. Should this occasion a remark such as "For xxxx's sake just get on with it, big boy" you can explain that whilst you are all in favour of the earth moving, you are endeavouring to achieve that without creating a tidal wave at the same time.

I trust you find the advice useful. If you require any further instruction, a demonstration can be arranged at my usual fee, plus out-of-pocket expenses.

This one should go into the (often promised by Kim) archive of 'outstanding posts'

Maybe this is the one and only true disagvantage of a lighter boat. Certainly with our Jeanneau it would appear that the resonant frequancy of the entire rig is about 120Hz with harmonics occuring either side of that.

The up side of this (if you see what I mean) is that the energy put into the system if off course dissipated once input has ceased - which saves on the necessity for all that lovey dovey malarkey.

Alternatively, prior to operations beginning the keen yachtsman could affix large weights at various points on the rig. Care should be taken however to avoid doing this at places likely to produce harmonics (1/2 way) etc. In much the same way as a guitar string provides a harmonic (hormoanic?) when a finger is placed lightly at the strategic place.

Magic

I suppose a flopper stopper would just prolong the problem ...

Well, I suppose a demonstration could be interesting ... I do however use the front bedroom rather than the back as I'd opt for a bit of slamming rather than slapping anyday! I thought I'd sorted out the harmonics problem by playing the Beach Boys and just to be doubly sure Bob Dylan as well. I did think about getting a deep lead keel to match my pencil, is that a good idea?

No No No No....
You can't use Bob Dylan and the Beach Boys as they have similar Subdominant rythms. You Must use dissimilar types of music, eg Beethovens Moonlight Sonata and something by Guns 'n Roses. You don't need to have them playing in the same room. You could try Beethoven in the conservatory and Guns 'n Roses in the back room. This has hidden benefits in that, should you be in the front room- sans slapping, you may not be able to hear either.

As for the deep lead keel - well as long as its kept sharp you'll be ok...
