Whats the best sewing thread for canvas work that can be used in a sewing machine?. It will need to stand up well, to UV.( Not for use in Scotland by the way /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif)
Dabond V69 bonded polyester 1 oz net - obtainable from sailmakers - whether it will work in your machine will depend on the machine and how it is set up.
The needle is probably more important than the type of machine. Industrials are designed for long periods of high speed use, rather than "punch".
I have an old Jones domestic which will sew three layers of acrylic canvas with a denim needle.
Polyester thread is the stuff, as others have said. I get mine and most other materials from Hawke House Marine or Martex Marine. Both have websites.
I agree with GordonMc about using the correct needles. I bought some called "Jeans Needles" from a specialist sewing shop and had no problem repairing a sprayhood and tonneau using an old hand-operated Singer machine.
I got the needles from "World of Sewing" based in Bromley, Kent. They do mail order and their website is : www.sewing-world.co.uk
What is it you're sewing- people mean all manner of things by canvas. Are you making/repairing a sail in which case is it terelene or one of the canvas-type things like duradon or clipper? or making a cover or suchlike using acrylic or a pvc-coated fabric?
Sorry about the slow reply...
I'd agree with the others then, polyester thread, Dabond's v69 would be my choice with a 110 or 120 needle. I was going to suggest a cotton-coated polyester such as Terko 12 thread if you were working on a pvc coated fabric... Done in straight stitch it swells slightly when wet and is unlikely to leak.
