Hello, hopefully you all are having good morning, day or evening . I need an advise on uv resistant thread for Bimini, we bought (almost) a boat , she has very sound Bimini, but I will need to redo all seems , as it falling apart because of sun and salt, I assume. I'm sure my old bulletproof soviet sewing machine will do the trick, I just need to know what thread and what needle I have to buy? :confused:Thanks a lot in advance.:)

You will probably get what you need from Kayospruce, Fareham,

*Dabond* V69 would most certainly do. Needle size 18 (110).
If you can't fit/find the needle, a more common 16 (100) needle could do, it may work more easily with V46 thread.

I have made anew or restitched all my canvaswork (bimini, awnings, sprayhood, weatherclothes, etc) with V69 and they are going very strong.

Thanks a lot, bought needles from Amazon- both sizes , just in case:) Thanks for a link to kayospruce will call them in the morning.

For UV resistant thread . . . polyester v69 is ok . . . .but the real 'lifetime' thread is PTFE. Both Helios and Tenara make PTFE thread.

If you are used to sewing with polyester thread, the PTFE thread requires some playing with the tension adjustment because its rather more slippy than polyester.

And PTFE is 10x the cost of polyester thread . . . .but it will outlast the fabric.

+1

amended link to thread types - but make sure they say lifetime

Thanks a lot to all of you, I was a reader for this forum from the moment my husband decided that he wants to buy a boat and live on it. Now that we actually did it it's very nice and reassuring to know that there are people who I can relay on and ask for advice. :)))
