Morning all,

Just wanted to let you know that the winds around Ireland and the western UK are looking unseasonably strong tomorrow.

As the area of low pressure tracks over Ireland there is a chance of the winds increasing to be in excess of F10 through Sunday. The strongest winds could last from late this evening to late Sunday evening.

In fact, almost no sea areas escape the strong winds.

Check the latest forecasts before sailing as this has the potential to be particularly nasty, especially given the Round Ireland Race which is going to be taking place from today.

Stay safe,
Simon

Hopefully Leopard and the Volvo's will get all the wind they need to make it around in record time. I saw her out in the bay yesterday, wow, what a sight! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Thanks for the update, on email too, Simon.

What is interesting to me (as a relative novice practicing my own forecasting) is that the actual pressure in the low is only around 990. Normally, this wouldnt be a problem, but the gradient to the higher pressures of about 1010 is pretty steep, hence the problems I assume.

BTW, your Analysis and 24hr Forecast chart is garbled at the bottom - does this hide the date/time of the analysis?

Hi Nick,

Yes, good point. Goes to show that low low pressure (if tyhat makes sense) doesn't exclusively bring stronger winds. It is all about graduents rather than the actual pressures.

I think that the garbled bit on the charts is a wee problem here. The latest charts are below.

Best wishes,
Simon

where is the race forecast, Simon?

I was amused to read the the course is very simple [ QUOTE ]
Leave Ireland and all its islands excluding Rockall to starboard. The distance is approximately 704 nm.

[/ QUOTE ]

Doesnt look good for breaking records, to me.

Hi Stu,

Yep, good call to ride this one out. I really don't like the look of those winds, especially between 0700 and 1200 tomorrow in the Irish Sea.

Yes thanks.

the problem is that I don't use your .tv site simply because the sound on my laptop is knacked (an abject lesson in buying a 'bargain' on ebay), so I can't hear your dulcit tones.

I am buying a good boy in the hope that Santa brings me a new one later in the year. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Looks like they have taken heed of it too.

From the Race website

In view of the severe weather forecast the Race Committee has decided to postpone the start of the BMW Round Ireland Yacht Race until 10.00 hours on Sunday 22nd June 2008.

It is felt that this decision would allow a greater percentage of yachts to complete the course.

Please check this website for further update details.

Problem is that still puts them out right at the time of the strongest winds, and if that thing has a sting jet underneath it (which it could well do) there could be some very severe gusts.

latest GFS following the same sort of lines, period of strongest winds looking like being up to around 4pm Sunday afternoon.
