Ha !

Last year I spent a couple o weeks on board lat Sept/ Oct and the weather was settled and fresh ? The Admiral thought it would be a good idea to do the same this year.

So we stocked up the boat (funbox) and filled her up (well nearly) and off we went to Dublin.

We had a fair crossing leaving at 10.30 pm and travelling through the night. It was a little lumpy, and one of the Seafairing whippet Attack Dogs was seasick during the early hours, she is suitably ashamed :(

We arrived in Dublin about 09.00hrs and stayed at Poolbeg Marina for a couple of nights, not the mostpretty of marinas but, it is probably the most friendly in the bay. Visitors are always made welcome.

We then decided to go around to Howth marina, passing the lighthouse at the enterance to the bay and some of the more expensive houses on route.

When the Lotto comes in big style I'm having one of these.

Arriving at Howth it was very pleasant weather and we were given a berth no problem, that said it was only when I had switched everything off that I noticed a distinct lack of Mobos.

Raggies everywhere !

In all directions..!

I knew that Howth was a great sailing club/marina but I never expected to see so many sailboats and very few Mobos. I would say that there is less than a dozen Mobos in the marina if you discount the official boats. It is a great marina with excellent facilities and wifi which I will visit again. Our plan was to go to the (Newry sp!) canal at the top of Carlingford for a couple of days, but .......

The weather forecast was dreadful and we only had one weather window to get back to PD so it was decided to leave early and get back before the weather trapped us in Ireland, which wouldnt have been that bad. We got back from Howth to PD in 9hrs which if my calculations are correct thats an average of 7.7knts, not bad for an old wood pallet (Major) We have been sat on the boat in the rain and wind since Thursday and decided that we would be better at home, so our two week jaunt has been cut short and judging by this weeks forecast we wont be going back to soon. :(

I contacted Son Vida whilst over there but he was away and couldnt get to meet us.... third time lucky ?

Tom

some nice pics there Tom

this year seems to have been good for the early crowd, and I'm still hopefull of something in about 10 days (not a hard plan just a thought) but we also decided to cut and run back from Plymouth in early August for the same reason.

glad you had some good moments!

Wow. That is real enemy territory.

I bet you felt like fluffy bunny in a wolves lair.

You're only miffed because he admitted to a freshly stocked funbox and he is out. :D

I am imagining those raggies helping deplete it. "Ahh ter beshur littleship, tis the finest single malt I ever tasted, Begorrah; tis a shame that the Major himself canna cast a verdict". :D

Very nice pics.

10.5 hours to go to Dublin.
I thought it was just an afternoons jaunt.

That Poolbeg place is nice and friendly. Howth is nice to. Be carefull if they send you round the marina to the left, then sharp right hand bend. I knocked my props off round there once.:(

did you not go & try the the posh sea food outlets. Then there's the fish chowder van, that's good, tho don't take the fish chowder back to the new memorial to drink and then the relatives arrive. Henry (dog) and I were not popular.

Thanks for posting Tom, it looks like a great piece of coastline. You can't be accused of being idle this season, Littleship is covering some good miles.

Did you manage to get the new auto-pilot installed for this trip?

It is and has some very good cruising, just a bit difficult to get to :) As you know the Irish sea is a challenge at the best of times. We have had a good year but thats retirement for you ! Next year is going to be even better as I'm off to the Caledonian Canal, cant wait. I suppose that the winter months will be used up fitting the Auto Helm and planing for the trip :)

The new auto helm was delivered on Monday morning and it is now under the bed waiting for December when LS comes out of the water and is covered until April :( :(

Tom

I read recently about the upcoming Caledonian Canal cruise with Bernie 'Tresner' in May '11.
There's a possiblity I will be in Inverness at the same/similar time, so maybe able to track you down Tom.
Divemaster Alf has 'Navigator' based in Inverness these days, he may be interested in a run up the canal also :).

Crikey this could be a' Meeting of the Hemisphere's Meet'!

I promised Bern/Tres a white knuckle un through the Swellies
Yer up fer that Tassie Mate? !!

BTW Kwacka....what does the 'plus' sign mean after your username in the little box (currently active users) under the thread listings?

Is it the new improved Kawasaki? :)

AndieMac

I think what Kwacka means is that he will buy the round in the pub when we showup.:D

This could be a great adventure. Hope to meet you in person along the Caladonian. I have it on bad authority that the Major will be keeping the fun box full during the voyage. At least that's what I think he said in a previous post. What do you think Kwacka, should we put that to a forum vote? Or at least the North Wales Mob and its International Contingent.

I would like to see the entire mob make the trip.

Now that would be an interesting cruise Bernie, bit of open and sheltered waterways to keep things diverse.

Have you done the locks before?

Of course you will need to prepare for all the wooden boat jokes, at least Tom will have some back up :)

Never done the locks in Europe, but we have them in the Northwest of the USA. I'm really looking forward to going through the locks to the lochs and hopefully having some lox along the way.
I've owned wooded boats for years and have heard a lot of the kidding. It's normal for people to say these sorts of things when confronted with a Real Mans boat. We try to be kind and let them have there fun. Just another case of timber envy.
