Setting up a boating business

3d-marine.co.uk is available and it looks like the .com was not renewed last month so may be available soon.

I would always recommend trying to get a name where both .co.uk and .com can be registered if possible.

OK, next decision is what to call this boating venture. These were some names that I came up with:

"F3Marine" ('Fat Free' but worried this is too much like F4 Swindlery and too forgettable)
"BoatMods.co.uk" (or YachtMods)
"BespokeMarine.co.uk"
"VectorMarine" (not keen as sounds like something from the apprentice)

I also liked "UrbanMarine" because it sounded cool, but is a bit random.

JTB suggested "Mansion Marine" (my surname) then suggested "Overbeck Marine" based on the name of my favourite country house (a bit like your 'pornstar' name game I think)! Or I suppose we could have "Cotswold Marine" but that's just weird innit?

Any thoughts?

waiting for my next meeting so some comments from a foreigner...

right, boats imho is off (I feel that some of the wind assisted guys wont really like it, otoh I wonder what percentage of your business will be on that side anyway...)
marine seems fine,
3D I don't like as it implies computer graphics/modeling/fabrication and may alienate ppl
Vector as above

Assuming business will expand to more than lettering, the bespoke seems okayish, not got any flare though.

I know my comments are not constructive more like destructive but that's my 2eurocent for now, 2billion drachmas soon...

cheers

PS. will send a new corrected AI file as soon as I've got the time
PPS. one thing that got me struggling was deciding on the SIZE of the transom letters! A nice web tool with typical transoms (yacht, mobo1, mobo2, mobo3) where you can spec the width of the transom and then see the letters in place and play with sizes would be nice. Not easy, but v.nice! And it's mainly a programming tool. May allow for importing transom pics, scale and then add the letters as a flat projection? Just thinking out loud, and mind haven't bothered checking other such sites, so maybe it's already done.

As part of my eCommerce build I already installed and configured a tool that does roughly what you say. In fact, if you send me a picture of your transom I can add it to the library of sterns!

good!

you'll have to wait for the transom pic as I'll either have to go swimming to get a pic with a tele lens (to avoid distortion) or I should take up flying :p

Thanks. I'm not a big fan of hyphenated domain names.

Regarding .com and .co.uk, if there was a .co.uk available and the .com was an overseas business that wouldn't concern me.

Note that 3dmarine.eu is available so that's an option worth considering.

creative juices flowing!
Generally if you try to describe something too exactly within the name (eg what you do or where you are) you're going to regret it (Essex Boatyards). Pick something that itself means nothing (Apple, Coke, Samsung). Now, I wouldn't take that principle too far, so you could include "marine" in the name to establish the industry sector, but that's as far as you should go imho. So pick something like mansionmarine, juicemarine, matchmarine

Marinesolutions?

nice one P! I like that (although I have a feeling I've heard it before...)

or maybe along the same lines marinedilutions :p

was thinking of a fancy word for solutions, the Greek one that's a really smart word in Greek and has possibly made it to EN, not sure is επίλυσις or epilisis (don't think it will work as it's phonetically closer than it should to epilepses :)
marine*lysis or marineXlysis

ok, probably need to discard the lot Pete

I think "solutions" is too narrow a concept. On the spectrum, it is at the essexboatyards end instead of the apple end. You should choose a randomish word and define it, not have it define you
