Setalk Starter Kit Power Connections

I'm sure some of you will have seen my other posts where I've just installed A Raymarine network starter kit as per;

I got it all working yesterday and have just gone to tidy up and connect up properly and am after some clarification on the power connection from the 5 way adaptor in the kit.

The power lead has a positive and negative which I just connected to the battery yesterday and all worked fine but it also has a unsheathed 3rd wire too. Any ideas if I should be doing anything with this 3rd wire?

Yes that’s right. It’s bare.

If you have a Gnd on your boat connect to that. i.e. effectively earthed to the water.

Yes onto a ground plate if you have one or I normally stick them onto the negative bus.

Right ok, thanks - I can't remember seeing a ground anywhere but I'll have a decent look tomorrow when I go to finish this off.

If I can't find one you say wire the negative bus, forgive my ignorance but what do you mean? Negative terminal of the battery along with the negative connection?

I only have a basic fish finder transducer connected to the MFD plus another separate one on a little raymarine ST display.

Ah OK, it's just that with that Seatalk NG interface you can connect the Raymarine ST to your plotter and display the depth on it.

When I installed an e7 onto my legacy Raymarine system I was told that the seatalk converter wouldn’t require a power source so I never wired in the power and it functioned perfectly.

It might be worth trying without power to the converter if you have the time.

Likewise, when wiring up my new e95 + ais, then I found it all worked without the power cable - consequently I believe that the converter gets it’s power from the e95 plotter

Raymarine plotters can only supply a maximum amount of power over Seatalk - in some cases this isn't enough so you need a powered network.

Bare wire goes to negative if you don't have a separate ground.

What converter? Unless he mentioned it in his other thread which I can't find, the OP has said nothing about any "converter".

When he says 'converter', he means the Seatalk NG backbone.
