That boat belonged to a member of our club for many tears and was always kept in tip top condition. He shoehorned a Yanmar 1GM into it to replace the Stuart Turner. When he gave up it sat for more than a year in Davis's yard where that photo was taken and went downhill quickly before finding a buyer. Not seen it since

I hope her new owner restores her.

I didn't have an inboard engine in mine; just a British Seagull o/b which didn't get much use because she was so easy to handle under sail (and paddle).

A nice little boat that gave me an enormous amount of pleasure.

Fraid I am one of the garage builders.. Couple of little ones when a teen, then bought Devlin's Winter Wren plans about 20 yrs ago. Decided against it because of not liking stitch and tape with big epoxy fillets, after cutting out all the bulkheads and hull panels in a day. Plus we were moving countries. Built Oughtred's Whilly Tern 15ft faering in 06/7. Then thought bigger, so started Dix's Cape Henry 21. Got as far as half the hull panels on the bulheads and stringers, then had to rethink... Stopped and decided a smaller boat was better. So have now finished a little cat yawl based on Phil Bolger's Micro design. Longer and less 'square'..
Just sorting a trailor before splashing. Rules here mean no DIY trailers, but I have located an axle and drawbar, both plated for 750kg. So a bit of 'restoration' next.

It is a bit in the blood, my father designed the Fleetwind 12ft dinghy, quite popular in the 50/60s, the Wavecrest and the Spitfire 20ft cruiser/racer. About 250 built, many from plans by amateurs. One won the Cinque Ports cross channel race outright. Wind was just right and he planed all the way...They didn't realise he was in the race when he crossed the line, as expecting the big ocean racers.. But. his wife did not sail again after that..

On costs.: Built the Whilly Tern for about 1200 euro. Made the sails, fittings and trailer. When I moved on to the Dix 21, ply here was rediculously expensive, so bought some from UK. Since found a source of reasonable quality ply that doesn't break the bank. Not true marine, but good glue and half decent inner plys. The Micro costs are around 1500?, But lucked into a set of sails from Holland, that were little used. Very few fittings or rigging, as free standing masts. Not to mention 'winning' a big can of epoxy on clearing a failed project. 200 lts. plus hardeners. Built my boat and two friends ones.
