Servicing Gibb winches

On ours there is a circlip that holds the top part that you engage the winch handle, the body is held by a single slotted (M5 I Think) stainless screw.
Ours had a problem in as much as the circlip would come out allowing the top part to come out. I solved the problem by having some discs made and the top of the winch body machined so the discs are flush, they are held in with 5 countersunk screws, now the winc wont come apart. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Thanks guys. There is a screw which holds the top part in, that's no problem, and it allows access to the top pawls. It's lifting the main body from the base that's the problem

I am having prcisely the same problem on two winches. a Gibb sheetmaster 752, and a Gibb Sheetmaster 901.
Have poured releasing oil in. Put a puller on top. Going back to boat to see what happens overnight and keeping my fingers crossed:)

Originally this message had photoes I took of the whole procedure
Is there a way of posting jpeg's here- a picture says a thousend words

I figured it out!
Overnight the smaller winch did not budge with releasing oil and a puller:

The bigger winch did budge with releasing oil and wedging screwdrivers beneath it:

SLOWLY started to wedge open the gap by moving the screwdrivers around( took about an hour)
But she did move

With this bit removed the winch was still very stiff so I removed the winch mechanism leaving the bolts back in place

This is the winch mechanism of the opposite side(starboard) still in place as it works fine

Took all the bits home. Must admit I used oven cleaner to get the old grease oil and muck off. There was quite a bit of sand and what looked like hair. Washed with detergent, some more releasing oil .
SLOWLY teased it out

All it needed was some more oven cleaner to clean the moving parts, WD40 spray, some marine grease and she worked fine! Slipping in and out like a dream!
