Hi,

I have a yamnar 2GM20 and I need to purchase a servicing kit, so oil filter, fuel filter (primary and the one on the engine), water belt (salt water fed), alternator belt and impeller. Quite a bit of difference in cost. These guys Boat Parts & Spares - New and Used boat parts ASAP, Chandlery, spares, boat maintenance seem to stock the alternative while someone like Home - Cutler Marine Engineering - Cutler Marine Limited has the originals. Anyone had any experience, obviously you don't want to be that guy in the middle of the ocean who wish he bought the other parts!!!

Cheers

Karl

I've been happy with ASAP for Yanmar spares and have bought non OEM parts from an online supplier recommended by forumites. (Unfortunately I've lost his details). I wouldn't use random eBay stuff as some is of dubious quality and the savings not worth the risk.

get yourself down the motorfactors. The fuel filters a bit tricky but the belt is common 950 x10 for the freshwaters cant remember the length for the raws but the oil filter is off a mazda and very common.

Don’t forget none of the parts you will use are made by Yanmar anyway. Oil and fuel filters of the shelf at autoparts, belts from belt supplier just take the old one to them or get OEM one and make sure you measure it for next time. Little fuel filter available from Parker.

FWIW My previous boat had a 2GM20 and the VP alternator belt became loose at least twice a season until I fitted a Gates model. It never needed adjustment after, at all.. As for the fuel filters I was cautious about fitting non genuine ones on the Engine Filter, I could never be certain what Micron paper the cheap ones had and that filter is your last line of defence. If you ever need a water elbow there a chap in the USA makes superb one from stainless steel (VP are steel and rust inside where you can't see it, £200+) see exhaust elbow.com

Gates belts and oil filter from a decent brand like Mann or Knecht or whatever.
Anodes from Duff or whoever.
Impellers, I find the genuine ones last well so just carry a spare or two and put the old one back in if it looks OK.
Buy the gaskets if they are a fair price, otherwise gasket paper and a scalpel!

The engine fuel filter should never get dirty, so I tend not to change it very often, but I do carry spares.
Spares have huge barter value sometimes!
