\"Service Recomendation\" forum??

Following on from the "Surveyor & Associates" post and the excellent advice offered, namely:

I agree that a real good one is hard to find - but not impossible and one of the pointers I always recc'd - is chat to other yotties around you .... who did they use, how much, what was the results, did they discuss all points before writing report etc.

And

The best surveyor you can have is someone recomended by a friend or your Club.

I wondereed whether a "Service Recommendation" forum might be useful? What do you think Kim?? Certainly it seems it could be a very useful service to us all for surveyors at least, but it could also prove useful for other services, engineers, riggers etc.

As someone who is planning to buy their first boat pretty soon I'd certainly welcome being able to tap into the recommendations of those whove been there and done that.

Apologies if this has been suggested before.

I suspect this is what forum member PGD is trying to do with his MSSA site - it will only work though if people post their experiences

One man\'s meat . .

Satisfaction can be very subjective, and someone may say Mr A is good, while another person may be dissatisfied with the same people.

There was a thread on here some time ago where some people were having allsorts of problems with Compass mail order chandlery. I have purchased a few things from them and have had no problems whatsoever. They even sorted out some stuff that had to be returned for a different size. So it can be different for different people.

Exactly ....

I posted again on the Surveyors bit about each person having different experience .... in fact mentioned a very god surveyor friend of mine who ran foul of a bad client ....

It works both ways and the both sides should be absolutely sure of each step and requirement ... even to putting it down in writing in form of contract.

Surveying, etc are all 'professions' with many sub-categories with some people best for certain types of work, so a blanket recommendation for one surveyor or one marine engineer or one rigger may not work for people with a different kind of boat or problem.

Good idea but practically unworkable

Example :
YBW in numerous publications / articles have quoted YBDSA as a 'professional' body.
Second - They would be liable for consequences of good or bad publicity affecting surveyors livelihood.
Third - One boats style / typ eis different from many others and a surveyor may be the best on eg steel and useless on wood ....

I think the best practice is stay with the forum approach as it is .... that way YBW cannot be held responsible and you will have 'personal experience' quoted only - without endorsement or perceived editorial endorsement.

Re: "Service Recomendation" forum??

I like the idea but, in addition to other comments, I think it is somewhat risky in practice. Its fine making recommendations on a one-to-one basis where you have some acquaintance with the other party, but not to a large number of unknowns.

There is a forum on here about restaurants, etc. If I recommend that you go to somewhere I enjoyed, and you have a bad meal, I would be sorry but that would be the end of it.

If I recommend you use a particular engineer to work on your engine, and he cocks it up, you would be a little annoyed or disappointed, and I would feel bad about that.

If I recommend a particular surveyor, broker or whatever, and you go ahead with the purchase which costs you a lot of money and turns out to be a complete wreck, then it could get extremely messy indeed. To take an extreme example, when the keel drops off on a blue water passage, questions might be asked as to who recommended the surveyor who said the bolts were fine.

Personally speaking, I'd rather stay off line amongst people I know, when it comes to such matters.

Use the toughest one you can find. As a boat-wise buyer you can distinguish real weaknesses from nit-picking, but it provides a great weapon for beating down the price of a good boat.

Re: \"Service Recomendation\" forum??

Thanks for all the comments and I appreciate the problems you've all raised. I still may post a "can anyone recommend a good surveyor in..." post when the time comes though!

Thanks....Tony C.
