I own a 2 year old swift 34 which I have had since new.

The boat has had two engine services (one each year) from the authorized Cummings and only has 150 hours.

The boat is with a yard I have known and trusted for 20 years but they are only known for servicing Volvo engines.

They are saying they can service the Cummings for me now

Should I get them to do this or do I need to keep using the authorized dealer?

I have the same boat and only one year newer. First does your yard have the diagnostic tools? SAE spanners? Access to Cummins spares and accessories? Can he point to another Cummins that they service? Also the service schedule. Find out first are they good mechanics by checking other people who use the yard and most important of all, is he any cheaper?
In principle I am not against non authorized dealers doing the work but for me they need to have a stellar reputation and be cheaper or you might as well stick with Cummins (as I intend to do)
Its the best engine in the world, show it some love!

Can't recall what the warranty period is on a QSB. If still under warranty I would main dealer service.

No idea where you are located, but if it is the Solent then I recommend Cummins agents Vasi Marine at Hamble Point. They used to service my Cummins engines in a previous boat, were very good value and the boat/engines were left clean and sorted.

I am now using Volvo D6. My last American made boat had a pair of Cummins QSB6.7. I find the Cummins a better engine with less problems and simpler and cheaper to maintain and service in my part of the world. They are sturdy and reliable machines.

When we bought our Fleming 55 which has 2 x Cummins 6CTA 8.3 - M3 engines, I enrolled in their 3 day tech course at their Daventry HQ which allowed me to work on the engines even whilst they were under warranty.

The course was terrific and I have access to Cummins spares and manuals.

Certainly recommended.

Hi Piers, I remember you saying this before but that was before I got my own Cummins so I didn't pay much heed to it. Now I'm super interested. Are you Joe Schmo like me or are you a qualified mechanic in a previous life?

Hi Bouba, not a qualified mechanic at all. But someone who started 'mechaniking' whilst working on farm machinery as a young teenager on my godma's farm, graduating to motorbikes, old cars, etc.etc. Always slow and methodical, but loving doing it. Over time, and being super-paranoid, I've found a small handful of engineers I allow to work on the engines/generators (Onan)/stabilisers when I feel just that bit too far out of my depth - in other words, anything much beyond general maintenance routines. A great plus is that apart from peace of mind, it saves a small fortune, is great fun and so rewarding.

The guy at one of the Cummins Parts offices is really knowledgable and helpful. I can provide names and contact numbers if you need them.

Most people think I'm mechanically mind and that I can fix most things. But of course modern engines are hidden from view and full of electronics but I would love to do this course for exactly the same reasons as you. Any details you could provide I would appreciate as it would be a great thing to do after the summer.

I'm on hols in the Maldives at the moment but will PM you shortly. You'll love the course at Daventry. Amazing. You'll strip the engine to the crankshaft and completely rebuild it.

So is that a holiday with or without Play d'eau?

Oh! Wouldn't I just love Play d'eau to be with us. What water colours. What sights. What tiny islands. What beauty. Diving, snorkling, eating. Even better - no mozzies.

I was going to say have a great holiday but you already are:cool:
