Been quoted 2400 euros for full service of a pair of VP TAMD 71b's which is almost 2k sterling. Now I usually do my own servicing so have an idea how much consumables would be and the overall price seems excessive but it is a long time since I have parted with cash to a VP dealer.

Is the quote excessive or is it the going rate for a VP dealer?

Try a uk dealer for a price, there not far out at that.

Was quoted by one dealer £2,800 for the first 12 month service (ie. gaining second year warranty) including all parts on a pair of D6 370s including DPH drives. Actually paid under £2k to my local VP dealer

Jeeze - just what do they do for a £2k service?!

No disrespect to VolvoPaul intended - but £2k seems a lot of money for a service - just for an engine?
It's probably to do with the complexity I guess ??

In Andrew38's case it's not just a service for an engine - it's two engines, and two drives. Price is consistent with what I've recently been charged by RK Marine for the same exercise. (Mind you, the cost of all the other stuff they find during the service would make your hair fall out...)

Cheers
Jimmy

yer - ok - two engines ... £1k per engine ...

I suppose as it is your primary power source you have to be certain of it's integrity - but even so it seems a lot of money to be paying over which is why I was curious as to what actually gets done for the money....

Afraid I don't get it aside from VP being generally expensive. I don't see that much complexity and there are no drives included so it seems incredibly excessive to me

Volvo see you as stupid and are just exploiting your naive nature. Not you alone though; there's thousands of you!

You don't have to go to the dealer to have your engines and drives serviced, some dealers offer cheaper lift outs and no storage charges if you use them.

You can also get the same level of service and more if you use an independent engineer especially on the older engines, the service you get is not mindlessly menu driven either.

I for example will attention to little jobs on the day I'm there that would normally carry an extra charge, which jimmy pointed out an example would be fitting a hose or switch at the time of service which you would have to pay for extra.

As an Audi car owner you would swallow hard at dealer prices per hour, I've just been quoted £355.00 for the first service on my car, all they do is change the oil and filter, I rang the dealer to find that approx £100, when I quizzed the labour it was near on £ 100 per hour.

I can tell you main dealers for volvopenta don't charge that amount.

Whilst I agree that VP are exploiting the market I don't consider myself stupid.....I do my own servicing so that I know my boat and to save spending money unnecessarily and when I do need someone with a bit more knowledge I go to an independent like volvopaul.

The only reason I am considering a VP dealer this time is that the boat is not mine but I may buy it and it is in a diferent country where I know nobody but need to rely upon work done to the engines immediatley prior to a sea passage.

Fly me over Greg and I'll come back with you.

Seems to me that to get the 2nd year warranty you have to buy an expensive 1st year service?
Mylocal VP dealer charges £50 P H and they are s. t hot, attention to detail is second to none and they even clean the bilges!
But yes, Ido think you are being quoted a lot of money, why noy just change impellers, fuel and air filters and check belt tension before you set off and the oil changed when you are somewhere that may be a little more reasonable?
Or just pay up and ope they do a 110% job.
Either way, good luck and let us know how you get on.
