Wind abated yesterday evening ( local folklore dictates that a Mistral lasts for 3 day), but not before we had another bout of forest fires including one above Cagnes/Antibes.

Was in La Rague yesterday morning, quite well sheltered but boats taking a bit of movement. Incredible views with clear skys.The winds had reduced sea temperature to 17 degrees ( from 27 degrees ) . Apparently it will take a week for it to get back up, I didn't think it would, but apparently yes it will.

Skys are all blue again and outside temperature is 28 degrees....

Seriously Stupid - What\'s an anchor?

Axshully , JFM has already explained the absence of sufficient metrage .. and it would have spoiled a good story.

What is more worrying is that as a serious yottie you have given the same serious answer as TCM , while my post was somewhat (???) in jest.(lier - Ed)

The worrying aspect is that TCM is now THINKING like a yottie. Are we to lose this icon of Decibels and soot to your lot? Or is he just practising to see if he can pass the Yotmaster without looking at any text?

Funny that - thort I would read the whole thread before suggesting the lump of metal at the front. My first choice as well - based on the fact drifting into unsafe zone.

I am not at all sure that YM courses teach you how to get out of the shit. Things like putting the anchor down asap, or checking that the thing is out of gear before pressing the green buttons do not seem to be covered at all. Nor is (ahem) getting the oars out very very quickly if the dinghy outboard conks out cos a rope is round the prop otherwise you will be blown away soon unless someone comes over in another dinghy.

Another serious bit of commonsense learnt last week, much better than RYA courses:-

Working out who is stand-on vessel. Treat like a (British) roundabout.... or ... if he can see your red light he gives way if he sees green it is his right of way.. .... well I think that's right, isn't it?

To be honest I have absolutely no idea. But the fgures are absolutely accurate as others can confirm what they were last week.

My assumption is that the sea temperatues we know and love are in fact relatively shallow. We had 2/3 days of force 6-8 westerlies which I ASSUME cooled the upper layers and replaced with cooler water. The same thing happened in the first week of July ( but not as dramatically). I'll monitor what happens over next few days to see if it rises.
I know this happens on coral reefs just never experienced it so dramatically in the Med.

Agreed - tho' depends how long he took to figure out the problem. If it was a couple of secs, then no need for anchor, but he doesn't appear to think that quickly/forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Re sea temp, according to our tridata thermometer it was 29/30 deg before the strong wind, then it fell to 23deg, within 2-3 days. When jumping in to swim, difference was very noticeable. I was surprised how fast the temp fell. Thing is, the sun was shining strong despite the wind and the air temp on land was high, still shorts/t shirt weather. I think the sea temp fell because of massive evaporation (and hence latent heat effect) of surface seawater caused by strong warm winds, but others might have better theories......

When we were on holiday at the end of July, we experienced a couple of days of Mistral following which the water temp seemed to be colder but, at the time, we put this down to the fact that we were close to Marseille and the colder water of the Rhone
Maybe the Mistral, which actually starts as a wind which blows down the Rhone valley, pushes colder water from the Rhone into the Med? Or is this bollox?
It cant be the air temp cooling the water 'coz the air temp can't be as low as 17deg at this time of year and it would take weeks to cool the water even if it was
Anyone know the definitive answer on this one?

Deleted User, it is not wind pushing water. There are no big currents. And as you say it is not cold air - the airtemp has been high 20s. So it must be latent heat evaporation, I guess. The F6/7 stream of 30deg air running across the surface will certainly evaporate a lot of sea. That's the only thing that could drop the temp fast enuf. Unless anyone knows better? I haven't done the sums to compute how much sea has to evaporate to absorb so much heat energy, my thermodynamics is too rusty.

and have a nice swim, not to drift.

It has just got to be bollox that the sea evaporated the warmer stuff surely, else it would've been rather (very) foggy all over the place, and even when it dumps a load of rain it doesn't rain six feet-worth in a few days which it would have to do (somewhere) if it had evaporated the same amount, also in a few days.

So, it surely is a case of the very deep sea being stirred up with wind. And the bottom must be very cold cos even in the summer the diver peeps wear wetsuits.

You're probably right, jfm but we noticed a current when anchored in a couple of places on our hols - off Hyeres and off Bandol if memory serves - strong enough to make swimming against it difficult

Fair question... rib was booking a jet ski from marine platform( 2 minute job) ....... boat staying well away from whole area cos jet skis surrounding it...
