Serious lorry accident on West Mersea

Nasty bend that, worse than it looks in the image. The low loader would need to take a bit of the other side of the road. Not pleasant. Hope the driver is going to be ok. Clearly he is not very well and I guess most of his passengers would have been getting on in years as well.

Bad enough do you think for the thing to have already (partly ?) fallen off the low loader and been obscured by the lorry cab from the bus driver approaching from here

I think that is what the Police suspect. They have put out an appeal for anybody with a dash cam that might have pictures of the lorry, probably to see if the steam engine had was becoming untied before the accident

Who knows. It would be uphill for the low loader so you would not normally expect it to be going fast. But who knows. The buses zip along as well. Poor driver would have just had a thin piece of metal twix him and the lorry cab.

I assume the lorry was going round a l/h bend with a top heavy & poorly secured traction engine,

I think it was a portable engine, not a traction engine. It's maybe a geeky point, but portables don't drive their wheels - they have to be towed - and are generally a lot lighter. This one looks quite small in the pictures. Maybe someone didn't think it would need as much strapping down?

It doesn't look like the bus and lorry came into contact at all. All the damage seems to have been caused by the bus hitting the steam engine. Looks very much like it slipped off as the lorry was rounding the bend and the bus was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Whichever, the plod will throw the book at the low loader driver.
Not that he doesn't deserve it unless something very extreme happened to allow the load to slip off the side.
