Is there one? A normal butane regulator is maybe £2.50 butthe marine ones are priced at more like £50. Obviously some cost difference but no way that much. Anyone found a source at sensible levels?

My marine one was about £30 which I'm happy to pay, as gas is one thing not to skimp on in any way !

I suspect insurers might have something to say if there was an accident ( which one survived to care ) and non-marine kit had been used, when aware of the proper thing, even if irrelevant to the accident ?

I would think that 90% of boats have standard regulators as most of us are unaware that there is a marine version. So does that mean that all our policies are invalid?

Our "Normal" Regulator is installed outside in the weather and sun. It has been working for 16 years now.
We parceled it in cotton bandage and lanolin and then covered with a Sunbrella canvas cover closed with cable ties.

With gas can you afford to cut corners and fit a £5 camping regulator rather than a £35 annexe M regulator that includes the above features and complies with the relevant standards.

Yes.

What will your insurance company say about the validity of your insurance?

If it's not in the contract, absolutely nothing. There is a ridiculous amount of scaremongering about things which might invalidate insurance.

It is recommended that they are replaced every 10 years so your boast that it has been working for 16 years does you no credit.

Recommended by whom, precisely? And on what basis? And with what knowledge of the poster's regulator, installation service regime and maintenance?

The manufacturer of the supply hose to my domestic BBQ print on it that it is only suitable for a 10 year life, which I completely ignore and assess the hose for cracks etc. myself. The regulator sits outdoors all year without any great sign of deterioration whereas on most boats the bottle, hose and regulator would be in a cockpit compartment.

You're lucky then .ttheres something in my policy about maintaining "the craft" not a lot but I am sure enough to give the insurance co the opputunity to avaoid paying out.

I would be surprised if "maintain" was taken to mean "always buying something with 'marine' on the label when possible." Just how many cases have there been of boats blowing up as a result of the use of standard gas regulators, as fitted to 99.9% (estimate) of boats?

Thinking about this the worst-case would be complete failure of the standard reg innards and high pressure gas getting to the burner and, possibly, blowing the valves.
Which would not happen on my set-up with the boat unattended as the cut off solenoid would need to be turned on.
I will continue to use standard regs and replace periodically. I would need two marine grade regs as I have both butane and propane tanks.

The marine (EN 12864 annex M ) regulators include several features which probably account for the difference in price between them and the cheapest of the cheap camping regulators.

Material in contact with the atmosphere is corrosion resistant. In particular this includes internal components above the diaphragm.

A vent on the edge of the diaphragm to drain water which may collect on the diaphragm.

An over-pressure relief valve with a downward facing vent.

+1 sensible reply.
