Selling your boat.

Boo Hoo.. Nah .. just 3 girls coming up to University = 3 years @£6Kpa and 6 years@ £8Kpa(top up fees) and don't want to saddle them with a lifetime of debt! Will get another boat at some point.

Don't want to depress you further, but if you really aren't going to saddle them with a life time of debt, ie. student loan repayments, the £6K per annum will be more like £7-8K, by the time you've bought those nice rugs that will save mummy's little baby from the horror of standing on that nasty carpetting and the new printer/scanner that they will need to have and the digital camera for the field trips, etc.... etc.... and once top up fees come on stream..... I daren't even bring myself to think about it.

Keep the boat, you might not be able to afford it, but you are going to need sanctuary.

So you'll be looking for £66K for Glen Rosa then? I know that AWBs are in demand but ...

Serriously, I've sold a couple of fishing boats privately and FWIW, here are my key points:

1. Make sure that the boat is looking and smelling good. Ie there no obvious bits in need of repair, I know its blindingly obvious but one small bad item amongst a load of good stuff starts buyers alarm bells ringing.
2. Use the RYA or is it the MCA (?) standard contract.
3. Use advertising carefully. I say this after spending £100 advertising my TT in The Sunday Times and getting no responses. 1 ad in Exchange & Mart for £50 and she was gone. I'd guess YM private plus boatandoutboards would be a good start but no experience of either.
4. Do you have to sell now? The world and his bro will be dumping boats on the market now, could you wait until early next year when people might be a bit more interested (no experience of this but seems right to me)
5. If esle fails there's a bennie dealer in Lymington....

Best of luck.

Re: Firstly

There's a much better market in daughters than AWB's. I know SWMBO's don't like that so...

I found that the IPC add hadn't been published and I'd sold cos of the IPC website entry. It was the web wot done it.

I hope they're going to study something useful and are in awe at your
self-sacrifice.

Always remember if you want to go sailing while your boatless, ask one of the other blokes here, I'm sure they'll take you.

Sort of my own thoughts, no hurry to sell as its more of a long term thing and looking forward to some winter sailing! You up for the first w/e in Oct?

Try what I did, but it kind of backfired.
Free marina berth offered if we put our boat with a particular broker in Plymouth, so there was me thinking nice free berth for the winters sailing....then someone comes along and pays the asking price in November!! I was gutted.

Ask each prospective buyer this one question. ''So what do you sail right now ?"
You may well elicit in response the information to determine..,a)Are they in turn trying to sell a boat first , b) are they actually very happy with the current boat(and therefore maybe dreaming) ,c) some idea of whether they can afford the upgrade to your beautiful boat ,having sold their last one and d) Are they 'allright' to deal with ?
Worked for me twice.

If you have to do it, these are my experiences of selling 4 and buying 5 boats.

She should be immaculate and smelling beautiful. Its women wot buy boats. No way on this earth is a guy going to persuade his other half that this is a fantastic bargain and able to cross oceans without so much as spilling the gin if she has detected the slightest whiff of pongy head/bilge/locker.

Other comments. If they start talking about anything other than your boat - forget it. They are just killing time and trying to be polite.

Try to watch them as they walk away. If they look back at your boat you have a chance. No look and they are already talking about their next viewing.

COuldn't agree more about tidying up and clean. Don't try and mask any smelly bits, clean them up. You'd be amazed at the cr*p that is out there for sale, with a few odd smelly socks, stale mouldy sandwiches on board, looking like the Marie Celeste. Make her look as if you care...

BTW, some people don't necessarily need to sell their boat before buying another one....

To be serious for once, I echo Peppermint's comment - I am sure you will find enough of us to take you sailing. Its a big decision to sell a boat you really enjoy, even for the benefit of the family. You and Bev will be welcome on Moondance - (especially if you help me fix my mast head light!)

I know you said you want to sell it privately but what about one of the second hand boatshows that occur around the time of the Southampton boat show?

erm .. do'nt think I could face losing her that soon .. need to get some more sailing in before the wrench is faced.

Only have a third of your problem with one going off to university but likewise there is the potential of the dreaded 'For Sale' sign going up on the mast.

I must say that having three going off in the same year is impressive, although a tad careless.

kim

erm not 3 in the same year but likely to be sequential ie as one will leave the other will start .. so in hock for the next 9 or 10 years .. and jist hope none get married!!!

Well - having been there and done that I can offer a veritable cornucopia of excellent advice.

1 - Price - I thought it critical that Dear Heart never found out what I really got.

2 - Swiss Bank Account - I found it useful that when letters arrived from Zurich I was able to convince her for a time that this was the house insurance I was attempting to get a lower quote for

3 - Airline Tickets - I think its quite important that you don't leave it on the dining room table with your passport - Dear Heart smelt a rat immediately and to be honest this was the first thread in what proved to be an unravelling of mammoth proportions.

Dear Heart and I are very happy - I know this because she tells me its true

Personally, I enjoyed having my name on the house deeds and the SSR register and it used to be such fun having my own switch card. Still she lets me drive the car which I so generously gave her.

Dear Heart is generous in other ways - for example when I told her about this post she said that you can use Claymore - at least we agreed on that.
