There are several options for what I could do with the existing kit:

1) accept the engineers' offer for what is worth (currently £500-£1000) as is. They would take it off and deal with it
2) take the engine away, split it up into parts and sell these on as "reconditioned". As the engine/SD really is in full working order, there are several bits that could be quite interesting (e.g. newish water pump, alternator, heat exchanger elements, filter units and so on; some of these seem to attract silly prices Perkins Volvo Penta 145506300 Md2030 Perama M30 Marine Heat Exchanger Core | eBay)
3) place the whole thing on ebay (or other for sale platform) for someone to bid for the whole lot. They could see it working, place a deposit, and agree to take it away when dismounted
4) other?
In what way will they be reconditioned? What's wrong with advertising them as they are, cleaned and inspected(as presumably good)? It would be misrepresentation.

OK.

So I have taken the plunge and paid the deposit for a new one (and new saildrive). The engineer tasked with the installation has suggested that we may find a buyer for £1800-2000 (engine + saildrive). If you think it may be worth more than that, let me know what I should do. It is currently running well...
That is about right - the values is as much in the saildrive as the engine. They are an horrendous cost new as you can only get the later 130 type. This will give you an idea of "retail" prices marineenterprisesltd.co.uk and a used saildrive with a new diaphragm would add as much as £1400. Look down the listings and you will find both 2030s and D1 30s

Market is though limited as anybody with a knackered 2030 would do like you and go for new unless they really tight and then would probably not want the drive. Similar with replacing a 2003 where the drive could be retained. On the other hand you might get somebody who wants the drive and the engine can be sold on as a "bobtail".

What did you decide on for the replacement?

I hauled a marinised Kubota tractor engine out of my ould/new boat and ordered a new Beta 14. Be that as it may, I then put the old engine on another online forum for £500. I had a phone call that evening, and the new owner turned up the following morning to collect. Gone in an instant.

I could then concentrate on lifting and mounting my new engine into place.

I replaced my ageing 3GM30 with a new 3YM30 5 years ago before shoving off into the blue, the old engine ran like clockwork but did have a cold start problem (took ages to start but thereafter was fine until left for a week or two - replaced injectors etc but no difference )
I sold the old engine on ebay for £1250, the buyer came down and heard it running, it was taken out and put onto a pallet whence it was shipped to Gibralter (no idea of the economics)
