Selling a Boat

What is the best time of year to sell a boat ?

Depends on Type of boat, Location, Condition etc! If we are taking about South UK then. If it is a project and cheap and trailable then Autumn on Ebay! If a Fishing style boat with a wheelhouse and heating then Autumn can also be good just as the weather turns. For sportscruisers it is definitely the Spring.

Many, Many Variables!

for the buyer or seller?
No,seriously, more people are thinking about boating when the sun comes out, surely, not when its driving rain and -2 degrees.
That said, people looking for a specific boat might spend many many months trying to find the right one, so for them, timing might be less important than the boat.
Old adage is that it goes quieter when the clocks change in Oct and picks up again in March.

Yesterday I got a call from the broker to say my boat had been sold, so I'd probably disagree with the common sense argument, though am surprised my boat has sold so late in the year.

Marketing and the broker you choose, plus a bit of luck would be what I would say.

(I used to own a Chaparral 215)

What is the best time of year to sell a boat ?
Both the London and Southampton boat shows in January and September respectively tempt buyers to go out and look for secondhand boats but the main selling season is Spring and early Summer with Easter being particularly busy. But it is also weather dependent. A couple of fine weekends early in Spring will kick start the market and similarly bad weather will keep buyers at home

As has been said very many variables etc. Small open speed boat - spring/summer. Cabin Cruiser anytime really. We sold our open sports boat in Sept and as soon as it went we started looking for our next one and have just completed the sale. For us the time of year was not relevant - it was right boat at the right price. Only thing at this time of year is the weather can make even looking unpleasant Also Sea Trials/deliveries etc get moved and cancelled far more!

A buyer with cash, will offer you far less in the Winter and get a cheap deal (reason no competition not so many buyers around) Summer more buyers around, more competition, better price you can expect. That common business sence. Supply and Demand
