Posting this on here after not much result in the MOBO area.

I am looking to sell a boat (which I have never done before) and was wondering what, if any, official documentation is required. For example:

1. Would a hand written receipt do? Is a formal bill of transfer required and if so who administers this?

2. What sort of transaction in terms of funds. Cash or bank transfer (boat worth under 12K)? What ways can I ensure I get my money before boat is taken away.

3. SSR and Radio papers. Last registered in 1994 - do I need to inform them?

Many thanks for your help.

A form of Bill of Sale is on the RYA website

Get cash or a bankers draft. Even drafts can be fraudulent so get the serial number in advance and ring the branch that issued it and ask for verification.

The SSR certificate states that it must be returned to them when the boat is sold.

The radio licence is non-transferable but I'm not sure if you have to tell them. Look at the Ofcom site if your nerves can stand it!

Re: Selling a boat - RYA Bill of Sale

Great help - many thanks.

No luck on the RYA form as it appears that you need to be a member to download. It seems ridiculous to become a member just for a form, so I cheekily as if anybody have the file and send it to me?

Re: Selling a boat - RYA Bill of Sale

Sold my boat recently, £5K, and simply provided a typewritten receipt along the lines of...

Confirmation of sale

Price £xx.xx, payment received (or not or deposit)

Boat sold as seen comprising
Boat xyz
radio, gps etc
anchor, warps etc
bits and pieces
and so on

I have Bought and sold a number of boats for myself and others and one key thing to remember is that no matter how nice the buyer is or what excuse is given:-
'You do not' hand over your boat until the buyers money is 'cleared' paid or better cash in your bank.

A Bill of Sale is NOT what you want. You should use the RYA "Agreement for the sale and puchase of a second hand boat". Get an RYA member to download it free for you. Use this and both you and the seller know exactly where you stand.
By far the best way to effect payment is for the Buyer and the Seller to go to a branch of the buyer's bank and do a CHAPS transfer in the bank. This is an immediate transfer of funds electronically and both the buyer and the seller have total security. Costs 25 quid and worth every penny!

You may want a bill of sale (BoS) from the MCA ,probably worth it for the purchaser of you have a trail of ownership so far. This issued at the time of sale. The sale and purchase agreement (SPA) precedes the sale and sets out the rights and obligations of both seller and purchaser (eg deposits, timescales for surveys /sea trials/accpetance of the vessel) and protects you both prior to the BoS which is the final receipt. You should not provide a BoS (of traditionally 64/64ths of a vessel) until the funds are in your account.
