Sell up and sail - Yesterday's strategy?

>I've always fancied a good look round Holland and the Baltic. But the it's cold in those parts.

That's precisely why we left Falmouth and went straight over Biscay to Spain. Our idea of getting dressed for sailing is putting on a swimming costume and sun tan cream.

I am an incredibly fortunate man that has a wife who loves sailing and cruising as much as I do.
Discover.

Indeed a lucky man. I jumped for a mature gap year and loved it. If I could have afforded it I would have gone on. I intend to go again. But I did miss companionship when at anchor in a beautiful, isolated place. Asking myself if I want a cup of tea is just mad!

So next time...

A Year At Sea: Sailing Solo around the North Atlantic

Perhaps it should be downsize, rationalise and sail.?

Yep, just what we did, moved to a cheaper area and 2 bed bungalow with tiny garden, from 4 bed with large garden. Virtually maintenance free and left empty 9-10/12 while we're sailing. Next move will be undertakers. The way house prices rocket in the UK, I wouldn't want to be off the ladder.

The estate agent reckons 6 months furnished let is a goer, so now we're trying to get rid of stuff we no longer need and having a massive spring clean. Swmbo hates change but has her eyes on the prize.

The musical instruments are lodged in a friends studio, china collection given away, many books auctioned family stuff and record collection going to sister. Car will live in a friends garage.

Propex heating being installed on the boat.

Now I need to find a buyer for 30'' waist, 44'' chest, custom made bike leathers. Some hopes!

Sell the car, they are less than peanuts to buy when you get back....

This thread makes interesting reading.

Someone mentioned times have changed: they certainly have! Forty years ago there were about 30 boats under construction in a site on the Swan River set aside for use by amateur boat builders. Today there is one. When I asked the Site Manager why this was so he said no-one can afford it anymore. I suppose that is right because the price of resin has quadrupled and the price of aluminum has sky-rocketed. Ferro boats don't seem to be built anymore.

Most cruising yachts were pretty basic in those days. From memory the Pardeys didn't have electric power, refrigeration, shower(?) power windlass and what did they do for navigation lights? (Of course GPS, depth-sounders were yet to be invented) Their yacht was absolutely basic: who would cruise like that these days - it would be illegal anyway. Both the pardeys and the Hiscocks made a living out of slide show evenings and writing books. I don't there would be any money in that these days.

Just did a google on Lin Larry Pardy. Apparently they are land-based now. L . Here is their site

Read up some on Roger Taylor's travels in Ming Ming... To Iceland and places north in a Corribee without most of the mod cons considered essential today. I think the only 'legal' requirement is to show lights and maintain a lookout. GPS not compulsory yet. Having been lucking enough to go inside Ming Ming at last year's LIBS, I can assure you it falls into the absolutely basic category.

Price $US175000. Can you see value there?
I wonder after 45 years sailing will they settle down to land-based life?

I'm sure I saw the yacht is in NZ. I will go back and check it in a moment (the other window is saying "Page not found") That's where the Hiscock's Wanderer 1V(?) ended up I think.

Think it's NZ$175,000 = c.£89,000

I haven't worked out where Lin and Larry are phisically these days. In the morning (way past my bed time) I will read their newsletter.

It does seem that they have set up a boaty type business in NZ. I could be wrong - I'll have to read more ......in the morning.

"As many of you already know, we are giving up one of the best months
of the southern summer to fly north to winter where we will be presenting
a lot of seminars at the Toronto Boat Show and then the Strictly Sail Chicago

Yes they have based themselves in NZ
