After almost a year's ownership of my old tub I have just notice the self trailing arms seem to be on the opposite side (outboard as the below random photo) to just about every boat I have looked at recently including my last boat! (where they are situated on the inboard side of the winch)

Before I move them, might there be reason for this?

It wouldn't make much sense to direct the ropes over the side would it? Yikes..

Agreed, and makes it more awkward to feed the sheet over (what I have always called the "nose" rather than "arm") in the first place.

(A bit like having the toilet paper exiting at the back where you can't see the perforations!)

Mike.

Possibly a simple mistake in manufacture. Surprising that the commissioning dealer didn't pick it up. Rotating them 180 degrees will make things easier.

I have mine at about 8 o/c when looking out from the cockpit. This allows for three full turns on the winch, and a bit, but doesn't impinge on the seating.

I always position them so that when the rope is stripped out of the self tailer it's heading in the direction I want it to go without trying to leave the jaws prematurely which can lead to all sorts of heartbreak.

Absolutely!

Whats all this about agents and brochures???? Put it where you like, its easy!

Like making hammers with the heads on the wrong end?

2 blondes, nailing siding on a shed. One picks out a nail, looks at it for a moment then throws it in the bin. Second blonde asks why. First replies 'The head was on the wrong end'. The second says 'Don't be silly, that was for the other side of the shed.'
