Self-tailing that won\'t

Just bought new genoa sheet. This slips and slides a treat in the top section of the winch that grips the rope, neatly negating the self tailing properties of the winch.

The Chandler had the old rope to measure and said at that time "It's a fat 10mm" and sold me shiny, slippy 10mm braid on braid. The old stuff was solid colour non-slippy stuff.

I put a 12mm rope in the guide and it grips like b*gg*ery, so I trotted back to the chandler and asked what could be done about it. The response was a lecture on how to use my self-tailer, which as you can imagine, I really needed, after 20+ years of using them, and the view that "any size of rope can be used", so it's my fault. If I wanted, they offered, I could bring the winch in and they'd look at it for me!

I have decided to buy some 12mm from another shop and NEVER darken their doorstep again.

Nothing you can do about it, I suppose, but I'm a bit miffed at the £33.00 down the drain.

Well you can do something about it if you choose .... name and shame for the offhand attitude of the chandler. Personally, I would just accept my own error and make good use of it elsewhere.

Does seem strange - our self tailers grip anything from the 5mm furling line to the 10/12mm genoa sheets (I forget how thick they are) ... none of it is "slippery" mind...

Re: Self-tailing that won\'t

Firstly, I think you have to name and shame.. if only to make the rest of us a bit wary if we deal with the same chandler.

Secondly, if they sell winches, surely they could show it working, (or you could prove it didnt work), in the shop.

Their attitude seems to stink, whether they are right or wrong. If they dont have a winch to test it on, the easiest thing would have been to give you some new, suitable line, (perhaps a metre for you to test), and sell the line you return as seconds... someone would buy it. This way they keep a customer, someone else gets a good deal, and you probably rave about the service.

Very shortsighted!

Re: Self-tailing that won\'t

Seems odd that your self tailers can't adapt to such a small difference. Are you sure the springs aren't stuck in one position, having not had to adjust to a new rope diameter for some time? Or perhaps they are of a type that don't adjust to different diameters. My Lewmars had no trouble with shiney line and adjusted over a considerable range.
