Hi,

I've been discussing the possibility of upgrading my genoa sheet winches on my Beneteau First 26. However I remember seeing an add for a plastic type cap you fix over a winch to make it into a self-tailing type. Has anyone ever tried these?

Regards and Happy New Year!

I have and IMHO they don't really work properly.
Antal winches seem to be good value if you want
to buy some self tailers. You can always save a bit of money
by buying the single speed versions.

THis has been discussed before- Have a look on page 3 ( Robturner) under thd "WINCHES"

Cheers

Terry

There was a thread on this a couple of weeks ago,do a search,
was going to buy some myself but after reading other peoples opinions
of them decided against it!
regards mike

I know this sounds daft but I have had a set of these on my anderson winches for years and they are not a bad compromise. I think they work well on the anderson winch because they are known for having a good grip on the rope. If you already have non self tailing winches then at £30 a pair it must be worth a try

cheap winches

there was a guy with a big truck who sold winches at all the boat jumbles 2-3 yrs ago, if he's still around it's a good option, i saved over 50% on a pair of new lewmar st40s (i.e over £500)
p.s. i have it on good authority that 'winchers', the rubber caps are not a lot of good.

Nice idea but does not really work. You do not need the other habd to tail but to release the rope from the rubber groove. Some improvement but not much :(
