Self-su\'fish\'iencey- without the fish

I was wondering if any of you had sailed off over the horizon planning on being totally self-sufficient for a long voyage, but on a vegetarian diet? Could it be done, do you suppose? I know Moitessier took some little sprouting trays with him for fresh grub, but what else could feasibly be done aboard a standard yacht setting off in potentially hairy conditions? Yer regular earth-filled planters could be catastrophic in a capsize, and as for trailing runner beans up the mast...

A Frenchman crossed the Atlantic in an inflatable and supposedly existed on a diet of plankton and sea water. I think his name was Bombard and I believe he wrote a book about his experiences.

We used to have a girl in our club who lived [?existed?] on a diet of brown rice and fruit. A nice girl but she always looked ill.

Suggest you read Annie Hill Voyaging on a Small Income. Nearest to self sufficiency that I have seen

Re: Self-su\'fish\'iencey- without the fish

Hurrah! a post not about healthcare....

Annie Hill is probably the best source of info for a vegetarian diet. All i can think of in terms of "fresh" produce is sprouting beans, and the odd pot of herbs. Without fish, I'm guessing it would be difficult.

If you expanded the scope of self sufficiency to include barter/swop, I'm sure it might be more possible (If you have something/ skill to swap that is!)

Re: Self-su\'fish\'iencey- without the fish

There's a new cookbook that uses semen as the main ingredient. No kidding. Lots of protein. That could be your answer. Homegrown, too.

Re: Self-su\'fish\'iencey- without the fish

/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif Now just what did you search for in google to find that one?? Although singlehanded... no, no, don't even go there. Nothing wrong with soya mince.

Re: Self-su\'fish\'iencey- without the fish

Yes, Did get a bit heavy, but learned a lot that is useful if you get in the frame for the questions.

One of the drawbacks of the Annie Hill type diet, by her own admission is learning to live with the flatulence issue, which suggests probably best for lone sailors - hesitate to say singlehanded in the light of other posts!

Looking at the rude healthiness of my veggie daughter and her children suggests it might also reduce the need for healthcare

Stewart- you blokes are all the same. I'm not falling for that one again! /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Besides, I'm planning on going on my own. Not sure I have the... ah... required 'equipment' to produce the scran. Although I can see how it would be good if you were a bloke. Like one of those hot (warm?) soup vending machines, except free.

Re: Self-su\'fish\'iencey- without the fish

I think your body adapts to it after a while ( beans that is!) so flatulence becomes less of an issue- so I'm told! I did spend 6 months being mainly veggie and had no problems.

I do like fish though- seems a shame not to eat fish when you're on the sea and they are free.

Perhaps we ought to invite hugh fearnley whittingstall to do a wild food liveaboard programme. I'm sure there are lots of seaweeds we could eat.. not to mention all that shellfish too. (

/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif And the oysters could prepare you for the semen diet... not a million miles away in taste/ texture!

Re: Self-su\'fish\'iencey- without the fish

I think Annie was referring to her bean dominated diet rather than just non meat.

I am currently working in China and eating about 80% Chinese diet (although about to have an egg and tomato sandwich for supper). Similar effect to beans, but not noticed problems with the Chinese, so guess the body adjusts! Get back home in time for a good old roast turkey Xmas!

Re: Self-su\'fish\'iencey- without the fish

Tee hee. I love how all the posts after had to be so careful how they worded stuff.
Tee hee.
But really, somebody just published a book on cooking with semen; pigs semen, though. Yuck.

Re: Self-su\'fish\'iencey- without the fish

I read Annie Hill's, Voyaging on a Small Income, before we became liveaboards. It almost put me off for life. If I had to live to the meager standards she promotes I would bother. Not to say that I wouldn't if I had to now that we have taken the leap, but we sure would be bloody miserable. Skinny, but miserable.
While his meanderings may have been amusing, I wouldn't want to live life aboard like a real life trouville.

Re: Self-su\'fish\'iencey- without the fish

asafoetida is supposed to reduce flatulence. Smells awful but tastes good in lentils etc, givs them an authentic taste. A little goes a long way. Might be hard to find outside UK though. gotta be better than pigs semen anyway. Wonder how they collect it. "Morning Porky, here's this weeks Farmers Weekly, get on with it" /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif As for growing things, never had any luck on long passges, poor bertie the basil didn't last long in the sea air.

It's from the movie, '6 Cents'.

I confess I just assumed. I seldom look at people's bios- makes me feel uncomfortably like I'm stalking!
