Self steering

Yesterday I met the man himself in the car park of a marina in Almere. In exchange for an envelope, a shiny new wind vane steering gear was put in the back of my car!
I have to say Peter is a genuine enthusiast and very knowledgeable for his product. He is also very interested in the concept of pocket cruisers and the Jester. I think his comment "No German would venture off-shore in a boat that small." had an element of admiration, rather than reflecting on our sanity.

Not quite a German, as he is a German Swiss, but Thomas Jucker in Marta a 27' Bristol Pilot Cutter certainly ventured offshore in 2010 in a small boat. One might say that the Swiss have more reason than the Germans to avoid water with big ripples. Thomas like most of the finishers in 2010 had a Windpilot of course.

Well my Mr Vee Y&B arrived today, I'll get some photo's, seems to be well built and robust, and very lightweight due to the carbon fibre used :)

It does however look like some head scratching will be required to put it all together, no doubt it will be easier than it looks!

I'd be very interested in your experiences with the Mr Vee. I'd heard some reports that not as robust as required but maybe that was a Mark 1. The other factor is additional brackets required for mounting; I'd need a bit of a gantry to clear the counter.

The Y&B already comes with the extra brackets (I hope :P ) I did have to order an extra length of carbon tube because of my transom hung rudder, I'll let you know how it goes.

I doubt it since he's given up his voyages for the next year or two while he works on a business with a friend or something like that. It says on his blog.

To be honest, I wouldn't be very happy if I was Mr Vee!. To announce that Nathan is the winner, and then Nathan have a change of plans, isn't going to generate the positive publicity Mr Vee would be after.

I am also slightly narked that Nathan will not be posting that often! I was really looking forward to this year in Nathans' world.

Regards

Carl

Nathan been's very forthright and honest in the past, I'm sure that he will explain the situation to Sven and they will work out how to proceed :)

I've looked at just about every wind vane system until my head is spinning. I can't afford any of the very expensive ones. Mr Vee is a possibility or a decent second hand one but which one? Everyone thinks their's is best, I can find no impartial research to advise me.
Are they all good with just the odd gripe here or there or are some of them to be avoided at all costs?

I should see what comes up second hand & some will probably be too heavy/light for your boat to start with? There was a used Navik that went for £575 on ebay recently, as well as another brand new, boxed Navik, seller was trying for buy it now at £1200. Search for "Navic" as well as "Navik", sometimes people spell it incorrectly. I just got a used Navik in need of a bit of refurbishing for £400...

Here's the new, boxed one, 1 day left and currently £729...

So what your saying , John , is that you dress your windvane up like miss piggy.
