my new boat has a stern gland with a remote lubricator - brass body with tap and a long length of tube with what i assume is oil in it.

i can see there is currently lots of oil in the tube so no immediate problem but having had an old fashioned stuffing box and a greaser before, any advice on routine maintenance?

I presume the gland has lip seals along the shaft and the oil is the lubrication.

Sorry - re-read your post. It does sound like a remote greaser for a traditional packed stern gland as PyeEnd says. If so then it will be filled with waterproof grease. Take the top off and have a look.

Yep, definately sounds like a remote greaser with unscrewable top to allow grease re-fill. The later maintenance free seals are water fed (engine coolant post impeller T-off I think ???) and do not have greasers. As Roger says, unscrew the top and have a peek.

I have a shaft seal which is oil fed from a small container with a screw cap on it.If you put your finger in the top & it feels like oil,& it looks like oil it probably is.I top mine up with ordinary engine oil.
