Self-levelling cabin table, would you buy one?

Been done, Steadicam. The table is a good exercise, but totally impractical. How about a self-levelling boat :)

A mate of mine invented a kids' lunch-box that had a gimbal in it to keep it level; he tried to get me to invest. All through his spiel I was thinking: why would kids need this, unless they like getting beaten up? He did go on to manufacture, lost all his money.

I know steadicams have been done, I'm trying to help the guy apply his ideas to something a bit more useful than a chocolate teapot

I was thinking along the lines of something like this:

I'm thinking about a device that can clip to the rear stay or another part of the boat holding a gopro or something. I think it was lakesailor that was working on one, but I don't know if he gave up or not...

A steadicam is tens of thousands of £s and designed to hold 10-20KG cameras as you run across a building site!

Or is what I wanted what you were talking about? do you have a link or name or something?

Weren't hanging messtables commonplace in the sailing navy?

Yes - but they hung athwartships so wouldn't work for heel, only pitch. Also I think (not sure) that the outboard ends were fixed and it was only the inboard ends that hung from the deck beams. I think the hanging was more about making them cheaper and easily stowed for action.

Thanks - I'd seen pictures from HMS Victory of the arrangement you describe, and wasn't sure whether fully hanging tables were ever used.

Perhaps I'd fit one under that backstay-mounted gimballed patio heater I keep thinking of making, plumbed down one backstay to a gas canister in a transom locker...

how easy/difficult is it to make a simple gimballed (heel and pitch) support for a small radar scanner sitting about 8feet above deck level on a 50mm tube ? The price of current gimbals is enormous - £1500 plus. Is oil damping essential or would friction be sufficient, given that the CoG of a scanner is well below the pivot point ?
