Self amalgamating tape or self amalgamating tape?

All the stuff I've used has had a film between the layers.
Without the film I'd have thought it would risk self amalgamation on the roll maybe.
The stuff I use self amalgamates immediately it is stretched and applied. No need to wait for a couple of days although maybe the bond gets stronger over time.
I got my last supply off ebay.

That was always my belief too

Amalgamating tape does not last long in the outside environment exposed to UV light but some disintegrate much quicker than others
I like the stuff but when I bought my boat the deck, coachroof & everywhere was covered in tiny specks of what I believe was UV deteriorated black self amalgamating tape, which the owner had used over bottlescrews, swaged wire ferrules and anything that was sharp or could catch. The remains on the rigging screws were clearly in the process of breaking down, perhaps the modern stuff is UV stable?

Scotch 23. We've used it for cable splicing on ROV's forever, and have found nothing better, or more durable. Covered with Scotch 32 it never fails.

I use white s/a over the split pins on the turnbuckles it doesn't leave the nasty sticky mess that insulating tape does after a few months of salt water.

Never had that problem because I remove it and replace it every year when I do my rigging inspection. If it's breaking down in sunlight then its been on too long on my boat.

Most tapes are butyl rubber, you can get silicon rubber version ushly "alpha" brand, very expensive but well worth having on board, we repaired a split rubber boot on the end of the heat exchanger worked fine for weeks until I got a replacement.

Do you cover the Scotch 23 with the Scotch 32 because the 32 is uv stable? ?
Very good; UV's not been a problem underwater for a little while now ;) .
I wrap it in 32 as an added protection whilst it's freshly made and still bonding. It just means that we can use the connector immediately. Many also use ScotchKote on it, between the wraps, but this might just be for the 'buzz' from the glue.
