Greetings Pop Pickers!

I need to grease up the two Furlex (200S & 300S) and a Selden in-mast reefing gear which all say use "Furlin Grease". Is this anything special or would a light marine waterproof grease be OK, perhaps administered via a syringe?

I'm happy to buy the "proper" stuff if it's needed, just don't want to spend money on a branded grease that is just normal grease at the end of the day.

I look forward to hearing the collectives opinion!

Well its bright blue in colour and sticks like sh*t. The main advantage it seems to have over the ordinary marine grease I have on the boat is that the tube nozzle gets it in to the bearings without waste and it is viscous enough to stay there. I did not buy the tube I have, it came with the boat, but I would probably buy another just because of the handiness and durability. You will get a lot of years from one tube. I think it is better for the application than the Lewmar tubes of grease which are less viscous and a bit messier in use and probably as expensive.

Just done mine with Lewmar grease. Used a syringe to squirt it in. Seems to work OK. Think the Selden grease is the same as the Volvo grease for use in their shaft seals.

The stuff coming out of my tube is certainly blue, that is why I said it was that colour. Perhaps someone is refilling Furlex tubes with Keenol and selling them on, at the UK price it would be a nice little earner if there just was a bigger market.

They must have changed. I have an old tube of Selden grease which is a thick heavy grease of the normal colour unlike the Volvo shaft seal grease which is blue, or the Blakes seacock grease which is green. No way could you apply the old type Selden grease with a syringe - far too solid.

I would think that any decent waterproof grease would work as long as it is heavy enough not to wash off under wave pressure.

Following the comments of the collective (thanks for the advice chaps) I went to a Selden dealer and purchased their grease and can confirm that:

1) It's in a white tube
2) It's quite thick
3) It's sort of motor car grease coloured (brown ish)
4) It doesn't smell of anything other than grease

If I didn't know better I'd say it was waterproof axle bearing grease but anyway, item purchased and job now done.
