Selcruiser 27 Stringers and transom

I am negotiating the purchase of a 1974 Selcruiser. While it is a very nice boat with a Perkins T6-354 I know nothing about the construction this company uses when it comes to the stringers and the transom. The north American boats of which I am familiar from the 1970 almost all have wooden stringer and transoms that need replacing.
Is this a possible case with the Fjord vessels or are they a composite material.

Selco was a boat manufacturer in Norway, founded in 1957. Europes largest in mid 60's but from 1976 the 27 was made by Fjord Boats.
The 27 is a bit smallish for it's size so should be compared to other brands regardless of numbers in names.

Means that pics and projects can be googled under these names (project spells 'prosjekt' in Norwegian).

From this the stringers look like wooden, encapsulated in grp. Many of these boats still around so no apparent problems with structural design.

Thanks for the replies. That photo seems to show the area aft of the engine from shaft log with the framing for cabin mounting and the longitudinals . If there are any photos of mid ships I would appreciate seeing them or a link. I will do searches based on other comments - with thanks.
For a little background story - I bought this same boat in 1976 - had problems with the engine - got frustrated and sold it in 1982. BUT while I owned several boats in the coming year the stability and sea kindly nature of "Trudy 11" was never equaled (at least for its size) in the boats I owned subsequent. One might say I was haunted - because every marina I went to I found myself looking for it. Out of boating for more than 15 years I stumbled across a posting of a small charter business in North Western BC and there was the boat. Five years later I have just convinced the owner to sell it to me. Trouble is that is some 300 miles from me so its "as is almost sight unseen" purchase.
Now comes the welcome job of bringing it back to Bristol condition - thus my question about rotten stringers and transoms. I will be testing both with core drillings and will report in the coming months on the progress. Can't wait to get at it !

300 miles...

I went by train, plane and car, stayed in a hotel and drove on, to view mine (not Norwegian, though). Some 700 miles each way, and then a road & ferry transport for the boat, following a somewhat longer route.


Guess this is part of the enthusiasm. Good luck with your project :D

Very encouraging to know my level of nautical insanity has not reached its zenith and has yet a few more miles to go ;-)
 
Hi

I've almost completed a refurbishment of a 1973 Fjord 32 cabin and can confirm the stringers timber glassed in.

When I bought the boat my surveyor was very impressed with the standard of build quality and attention to detail. I'm sure the 27 is built to the same standard.

I'll have to post some finished photos. Struggle to upload photos to be honest but as she was launched just over a week ago and I've been really impressed with performance and sea-keeping. Just under 30 kts is not bad for a 40 yr old!

I'll have a go at uploading to photobucket and start a new thread.

Mine is in the yard having a meaty new lump put in. Cost more than the boat and I did quite a bit of reading and asking questions beforehand. Everything I got back was very positive. They are apparently built like tanks and pretty seaworthy. Looking forward to taking mine out soon. We have a mooring at Goole so flat out under the Humber Bridge is something I want to have on video somehow. I have done quite a bit of reworking inside and she now has a galley, toilet/shower and double berth forward. The helm area will be the social area, as it were.

Gary - we are moving to Anglesey in a couple of years. What's yours like for cruising down there. Coastal and the Swellies etc
