Probably a dodgy skin fitting, bought from local swindlery.
Interesting about the Fishguard Marina.(link from the same site).
That will be a real bonus, as thats do-able in a days cruise from Swansea.
We'll get round to see you yet...
You are usually pretty up on these things - do you have any idea if and when the marinas at Fishguard, Beaumaris or indeed the Pwllheli extension might be completeed or on site?
Speaking to our Harbour Master at Pwllheli he reckons Fishguard is years off. Apparently he has quarterly meetings with all the Welsh Harbour masters and this came from the guy from Fishguard. Lots of planning problems etc. Lots of things being said but nothing behind them. That is what I was told anyway.
A similar situation with Beaumaris, ABC marine are supposed to be senior partners and it was a guy from there telling me planning was a nightmare and it could take years, though that was at the end of 2002 I think, so things might have moved on.
On to Pwllheli, they are saying Spring 2006, the area was surveyed at the end of summer, I know cos the twat was flying up and down at near 10kts within feet of my boat. At night two, with what looked like a rally light pod on his wheelhouse. There was a meeting in December which put a delay on things while they try to find out if it will impact the Welsh language in the area. (This is welsh assembly gone crazy IMHO)
The new site for the pontoons is exactly where my mooring is, so I am waiting to be evicted, nothing heard yet, but the new contracts are due at the end of March, it will be interesting to see how many months they offer me.
I have seen no signs of new pontoons or piles turning up at the marina yard which I would expect a few months or so before the work begins, the pile driver wont be cheap to rent I would not have thought.
The HM also has no idea, as I ask him every time I see him, since it directly affects me. The extension they are building is for day boats only, but I think they are hoping to release lots of berths from the main marina. It will be interesting to see how real their waiting list is....
So that is what I know or have heard. Hope that helps..
I had also been told by a guy we know there that the local marine trade are all up in arms over the delay- then the principal of the new marine college refused to back the extension so they stopped all his students from doing day release in their businesses. This has now been resolved and the college are, I think, offering begrudging support for the extension.
To my mind if you take all this nonsense together with the delays being experienced in both Anglesey & Fishguard (though these are both being proposed by the same company, as you said) then it is indicative of the general approach to tourism by the powers that be in Wales.
I often have a little chuckle at all the money they spend advertising the place (on TV etc) when you consider the general reluctance of the authorities up there to spend any money on improving the tourist's lot and their unwillingness to try and grow the only real industry they have left. Bizarre.
They then wonder why everyone hot foots it off to Spain and France, where at least they cater for what the tourists require and generally do very nicely from it.
I love going to Wales and generally try to be as nice to the locals as you can, but the attitude of some of them towards us is downright hostile. I can see their poit regarding the tourists taking over, but let's face it it is only really busy for 6 weeks and about 10 weekends a year. The rest of the time they have the place largely to themselves.
It really does frustrate me, and on at least one weekend every season I wonder why I bother going there to receive that treatment, but then I go on the boat and revel in the beautiful scenery or meet a very nice local who makes up for all the aggressive ones!
