Now I am looking for someone who may have some info on her.

Supposedly built in 1984 in Cornwall. Cutter rig. She has about 6' of pulpit and 44' LOD, although I have not yet measured her.

Many thanks,

Howard

Yes, I have tried "curtis and Pape" and everything else I can find. There is an Ebbtide users group that seems very quiet.

Still hoping to find someone here with some info.

Pape

There used to be a steel boat builder at Islington Wharf, Penryn, Falmouth. Think they may
have been called Morvoren. The yard is being developed into the usual housing eyesore but there may be some business still going on there. They certainly built quite a few Pape boats. The yard at Looe was more of a wooden boat yard until the late nineties where it fell into neglect and I dont think ever recovered.

Alan Pape

Two builders in steel of Alan Pape designs Moraven Seacraft (spelling) and Oceancraft at Malpas (Les the Savage) Les built many of the Ebbtides 33/36 and the Petrel 30/32 the 44 could have been built by either. The builders plate on my 32 is on the main fuse panel.

Thanks for the info. We are Yanks and the boat is in Baltimore. We don't have possession of her yet.

Next week we are going to do our personal survey, after that we will either close or get a professional survey (but I kind of doubt it.)

I will see if I can get the builders info.

Can someone inform me as to the additional standing rigging on the mast. I see that there is a mast splice and shrouds that appear to relieve aft bending strain, and I see this same arrangement on other Pape's, e.g., Ebbtides.

We were down to the boat yesterday looking around outside, taking some measurements and ID'ing through hulls. I get her at 43' LOD but as it was 18F (-8C) with 10cm of blowing snow and 20K my tape could have easily shrunk that far. I know other things did.

Extra Rigging

The extra rigging you have seen are known as "jumper struts" they allow the yacht to be rigged as a cutter without the need for running backstays. If you post a picture of your intended purchase I could know it ? Regards

Safari

Hi, almost certain this was built by moravern seacraft the company no longer exists. Most of them being very well put together. The thing to look for is corrosion internally were the hull plates and stringers meet its a water trap, hard to get to but worth the effort.
A little on Alan Pape, he was trained in the office Jack Giles of Laurent Giles and this can be seen in his work. I dont think he ever designed an ugly boat and when properly set up the will all sail like a witch. Hope your survey goes well. For information it is Safari ( means lets go or journey in the east African bantu language of swahili) Regards

More info

We just came from the survey on the Pape and it did well. No major issues, but a few blemishes befitting a lady of her age.

I did find some info, it seems that she was built by Steven Andrews of Inventive Design & Development at the Curtis and Pape Boatyard in West Looe, Cornwall. Apparently SAFARA was her original name.

I don't find them on the web. We will be closing in a few weeks, hopefully, and then I'll have fuller access to her papers.

The other name that appears, and I'm a little confused by this at this minute, is:

CMC Metal Fabrication
Unit 14A
Telford Road
Bicester
Oxon, OX6 OTZ
0869 245353

Steel work probaly carried out by CMC and fitted out at the Looe yard would be my guess.
The guys who owned the yard before we built a boat there in 87 still lived in Looe and one of the apprentice shipwrights 'Jaffa' went and worked for Toms in Fowey.

Yes I can confirm the steel hull and decks were built at CMC Metal Fabrication, but Safara (as she was known then) was later moved to the Cutis and Pape boat yard (which is now nothing more than a nature reserve) in Looe, where she was fitted out by the owners.

Sbelt,

I responded to your PM. I was working on Safara all week and didn't have much chance to respond. I would love to hear more if you care to share. PM has my direct email.

Many thanks for your response.

Yacht Safara

Hi

I co-designed Safara with Alan Pape, and after having the steelwork done by CMC at Biscester in Oxfordshire, I took the yacht to Bristol, Metal Srpay, where she was metal arc spayed with aluminium. At the invitation of Alan Pape, who was a really nice guy, I then took her to the Curtis and Pape boatyard at Looe and fitted her out.
The interior was finished in Vilamoura, Portugal; Maderia, and finally in the BVI, where I made the interior doors, saloon table and other trim. If you take down some of the ceiling panels, you will see where I fitted them, the date and my signature - lol
I and my family lived and sailed Safara for 20 years, and am happy to answer any questions that you may have about her. She is a great boat.
