Security Marking a RIB

I placed an order at the SBS for a new ali RIB tender. My insurance company (Y) requires it to carry a permanent identification mark for it to be covered for theft. It does carry a serial number but it’s on a plate which obviously could be removed.

UV markings fade over time and I don’t really want to mess up the nicely painted hull. Any suggestions?
 
Fix a plate to the transom with your unique marking and use tamper proof screws for the fixing.

Get Timpsons or some such company to make a plastic plate. EBay will sort out the stainless steel screws.
 
By Ali I assume you mean Aluminium ?

if so get a good Aluminium welder to write in weld a name or number of your choice, it will never be erased completely but might affect resale value.
 
You may be misinterpreting the insurance request. My tender is marked TT Rafiki using vinyl lettering. This is permanently marked, and also means I don’t need a separate license for the tender. Note we berth on The Hamble, where licensing is patrolled.

The idea of marking the RIB is so that if it is stolen and subsequently recovered it can be identified as mine. The marking therefore needs to be something thieves can’t remove. Ideally without affecting the resale value should I decide to sell it on at some point.

The hull number of my Ribeye is stamped into the alu transom. No doubt this could be machined out, but pretty obvious as a consequence. How is an add on marking going to be any more secure? The lack of other responses to this thread would indicate this is not a common issue, and I’m sure most other owners would have a set up like mine. What would you do with a non alu tender? Difficult to screw or rivet a plate to hypalon or PVC?
 
Speak to your local police Safer Neighbourhood Team, they're often active on Twitter and Facebook. Most are using a technology called Dot Peen to securely mark property and will do it for free. Being a police standard it should keep your insurers happy.

Good idea. My bikes are marked this way.
 
Take a flat blade screwdriver and a light hammer and stamp something on the AL hull
Say AXA in three places two inside one under the hull .
Take pics and save them to file .

Doesn’t stop it being knicked .

Buy meets insurance requirements , play along with there game that’s all they are asking .

The OP states in post 1# it’s got a “plate riveted on the transoms “
This can be easily removed with a chisel or drill through the rivets / screws .Or replaced by the thief in such a way to look untampered with .
Basically I,am suggesting he personally engraves / stamps the AL hull .
Marks it where ever using up couple neurones of brain cells and being inventive with a sharp flat bladed screw driver

For the avoidance of doubt here’s a few more letters Z , T , H ,K , L ,V , E as well as the AXA i exampled .

Put one under the hull on a none fwd grounding area it may not even be ground out by the thief because he’s got the obvious one and the second bate on the inside as hopefully too stupid to realise there’s a third .But that does not matter in the insurance companies eyes .
Theses marks can not be removed with out leaving evidence of tampering .
They meet the insurance request .

Oh and one more thing while this threads subject is loosely crime prevention and tenders .
Never be stupid enough to write / mark / sign write / ....... “ T/T to [ mother ships name ] on the tender .

You are telling potential robbers in a busy anchorage your boats a good place to check out , sort of putting your boat ahead of the others .Not saying some ones not been left behind , but eyes will be on yours .

The vendor called this morning and advised the HIN plate is actually bonded to the transom so I’ve emailed Y to see if that’s sufficient. If not then I’ll get a punch set or ask the vendor if they’re able to do it.
 
Actually you are better with letter or number stamping as these can be detected using X ray, even if they are ground off, dot peening is simply a cheaper way of doing this and you cannot identify it when the peening is ground off.

Someone on these forums suggested using the SSR number of the parent vessel. You could always just use the number missing out the SSR.
