Security cameras on boats?

I have the same set-up as JTB, mifi with a free.fr sim card. (BTW A recent change with Free.fr is that you can downgrade your account to 2 euros a month - useful if you're not going to be on the boat during the winter. They have a reduced data allowance, but not sure how much it is.)

I found that the mifi didn't give great coverage throughout the boat so I also got one of these and use as a range extender https://www.tp-link.com/uk/products/details/cat-5090_TL-WR902AC.html

The beauty of both of these is that they are powered by USB so you have the choice of using a 220v adapter or a 24v one so your connectivity at anchor or underway does not need the genny running.

More on Free as a provider. Mike if you and S use Free as your internet/phone provider for your place then the costs goes down to €16 a month. We don’t use Free for data, it do use them for our place and find them pretty good.

Thanks for that tip about downgrading the free.fr account, I didn't know that. I'll give that a try this winter.

Tee-hee, you're making the point for me. Mifi means both you and S can be connected to the one device. At the same time. WITH NO WIRES! :D:D

More to the point our son can be connected to that one device and use up all our data in one day playing Fantasy Football;)

I have a Hikvision NVR (network video recorder) onboard with 6 Hikvision IP cameras around the boat. Some for security and some for boat monitoring whilst underway. The recorder is connected to the 4G router which enables viewing locally via WiFi and ethernet onboard as well as remotely via the Hikvision mobile app. Overkill, yes but security is a thing high on my list.

It is just ease of use really.
Your mobile phone is just that - a MOBILE and you take it away with you.
Yes, you can tether but you might want to pop out somewhere whilst someone wants to use your mobile phone tethered hotspot.
There isn't much (if any) managing of the SIM card within a MiFi.
Just buy a separate contract and have a dedicated "ships" internet - you won't regret it.
.
I've just remembered another reason why I stopped using my last mifi. I bought a monthly SIM data card for it which meant some months (when we were on the boat) I was bumping up against the data limit and other months (when we weren't on the boat) we weren't using the data I had paid for. I could buy an unlimited data card for the mifi (as I have on my mobile) but at £30+/month per card that starts to get expensive. Any thoughts?

Yes - I just shell out for the monthly contract.
These days, it is way cheaper than it has been.
But remember, we also have that cheap cava so we can afford it in Spain.

Actually though - did I read Jimmy saying that you SoF guys are buying your 4G contracts locally in France?
If so, there might be a better way.
It all changed at the end of last year.
If you buy a UK contract from a UK mobile phone company (Vodafone UK for example) you will automatically get a UK IP address even when you are in France.
This means that you can watch UK TV over the internet as though you were in the UK.
Thats what we are all doing in Spain.

Surely you need security cameras in you business to protect all them there tractors. Tax deductible as well !

Surely you cannot be suggesting that I put personal boating related expenses through the company? I must say that the thought has never ever crossed my mind

The mere thought hadn't even begun to speculate about the merest possibility of crossing my mind. I just thought while you are are talking of security............

Just catching up on this thread and looking at the internet again.
I can buy a 12 month 12 GB sim card via Three in the UK for just £40 and they allow 2 months in Spain.
So I am wondering if I went with this option just for the camera set up then does the Mifi use the internet when its on or just when the camera is triggered as this would be a cheap option to just use for cameras or will it just run for the 1st 2 months and then stop?

Thanks for the tip S

Yup found that out too. I have been looking at mifis. There seem to be a lot of rechargeable battery type 4G mifis out there which are relatively cheap but few which are mains powered. Can you or anyone else recommend a good mains powered mifi? Also if the mifi is placed in the saloon is it likely to provide a good signal in the cabins as well?
