Having just had a trip to swanage, used the tender, dragged it up the slip and left it there for someone to thief, and seeing someone sensible next to me with a nice long security cable that passed through both the outboard and the tender and then padlocked to a loop in the wall, I decided to find one.

Can I? No! Anyone know of a decent cable length say 4-5 metres and a proper padlock? Preferably out plastic cover so water proof...any linkies please?

Go to friendly rigger. Ask for offcut of plastic covered guardrail and a loop in each end please. Give them a little something for Fridays beers and acquire decent padlock (e.g. largish Squire, Abus, Chubb). /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Did just as is suggested last week, 2 wire strops to secure fuel tank to engine and another for when i go ashore. Trouble is after locking padlock for said fuel tank I lost both keys.

Doh!!! Now want to change the engine, what's the best way to break a padlock. It's only a small sterling jobby, presume bolt cutters the best route?

Lesson learned is not to keep both keys together, put them on a float of some kind and don't put them in a pocket with a hole in it! What a pillock!! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Don't forget to attach it really close to drop off points/pontoons - you don't want someone else getting in there do you! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I had made for me a 1x19 wire strop with 2 soft eyes, 2-4 metres longer than the dinghy. It is padlocked to the two clamp screws on the outboard and passes through the front of the dinghy before attaching to the dinghy dock with a second padlock. It could be removed but would require determination and would damage dinghy, engine or bothe. I use keyed-alike padlocks which are part of a set that I also use for locking liferaft etc so there are plenty of spare keys.

Computer shops sell a plastic enclosed steel wire for securing Lap Tops. Used one on my mast boom ect. when down this winter also wound it round the ladder ...every thing secure.

The problem with cable is you just need a small cable cutter to cut it. Out here most people have switched to stainless chain and two stainless padlocks. Put a foot or two of water pipe over each end of the chain, lock one end to the engine, feed chain through the fuel tank handle, padlock the other end to whatever.
