Just installed my planar heater and the run for the hot air duct inside the cockpit locker would benefit from a bit of securing to something solid. Can I use bog standard cable ties? Or some old 5mm rope. Any suggestions appreciated. PEEK cable ties seem a bit awkward to get hold of and expensive, since I want maybe 4 at most. Cheers

Mine is secured with metal fittings in the aft lockers and zip ties towards the front. It gets extremely hot in the lockers so I'd be nervous using cable ties. You definitely should insulate the duct either way, Wickes have rolls of insulation which work well and don't cost the earth.

You could consider using solid copper wire. Strip some electric cable.

Or........................stainless Jubileee clips or.............stainless steel banding

Stainless steel cable ties are reasonably readily available. They have several uses on a boat so it is worth having a few on hand.

Thanks for the replies. I had thought of the stainless cable ties but the edges are quite thin so was concerned that any movement might cut the ducting. I do have some solid copper wire I could strip, sounds good, .again I thought of seizing wire but the cutting problem with it being pretty thin, hence why I mentioned rope (not polypropelene blue stuff). Lustyd - the insulation lagging stuff, was it roofing rockwool type stuff ? (I might have some upstairs:)).

Kevlar is heat resistant

Back on the insulation subject, everything at Wickes seems to be about preventing pipes freezing. Anyone got any recent sources of heat proof lagging ? I keep finding dead links on the older threads. I want a bit of matting to wrap round the last bit of exhaust/skin fitting. (I am planning to put some rockwool around the hot air duct in the main cabin lockers)

Look for exhaust tape/wrap.

You could also wrap some rubber/foam tape around the ducting whre the cable ties are located to avoid chafe/het damage.

Why not buy the proper stuff from anyone that sells heaters ? Eberspacher, Webasto or Planar.

The only proper stuff I've seen is eber sleeves which look less effective than the stuff I bought, won't fit as well, and cost considerably more. Is there some other "proper stuff" you're referring to? Got a link?

Yes that's the stuff I found when I looked which is comparatively very expensive and doesn't seem to fit as well or be as flexible in its use

edit - and is not as widely available!

The proper stuff is that which is supplied by the people who make the heaters. I guess that they should know what they are doing.

At £6.99 per metre, i can't see that being considerably more than anything else.

Ah there's your problem, you're talking about a different subject again. Exhausts are not ducts.

Same thing really. Depends on what temperature you need it to withstand.
