We need a new VHF as fixed one is old and crackly and the hand held is not that good and being held together with tape.

Should we:

a) go for a two station VHF as we generally use the fly bridge or
b) a decent hand held and a new lower helm position fixed unit?

Your views please.

b) If you're calling from the flybridge you're likely to be close to whoever you're calling so range shouldn't be an issue. Also being more exposed to the elements up there a fixed set is likely to suffer whereas you can take the h/h downstairs.

Get a decent fixed set for downstairs where it's nice and dry and warm.

I thort you'd sed that Nick had already gone overbudget?

Agree with ljs. Flybridge VHF's tend not to last long coz they regularly get dosed in water. Best buy a good waterproof handheld that you can also use elsewhere such as in your tender or ashore

I'm with ljs on this on the school boats we have a fixed vhf down below, the handset of which can be taken upstairs. Guess what never done it yet, always take the handheld. In fact the vast majority of times your using the vhf is to call the Marina or such that you are visiting, so you'll be on the flybridge for handling and vision purposes yes? Clive

Just had a Simrad RS87 black box system fitted which should solve your problem, a control box is fitted out of the way and you can fit up to four active handsets. We have one mounted at the lower helm and a second mounted on the flybridge, all we do when not in use is unplug the flybridge handset. Not particularly cheap but performance is excellent and all the reports i have read in the press are positive. Raymarine also supply a very similar system.
