I'm looking for a pair of second hand (cheap) self-tailing winches. Size 46 - 50 (200mm base). Do not mind what make.
I have tried e-bay, any other suggestions.

Mmm - don't think you'll find any Cheap ST winches - on eBay they always seem to go for good money - a pair of new Lewmar ST 40's went recently for I beleive £700 - which is much cheaper than list price. The other possibility is local boat auctions - I picked mine up at Wroxham Boat Auction a few years ago at a very good price! Or see if there are any good deals at the Boat Shows.

I'd rather be sailing... :-) /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Alex, try giving Alan Beale @ Heron Yacht Services a ring, as he is very competetive on new winches, he very often has s/h available that he has taken in part ex. Mob.No. 07836545509..... Hope this Helps. Tony W,

Ive got a pair of old Lewmar 45 non self tailers that I'm just to lazy to put on Ebay. If you're interested send me a PM

I think I paid £500 or £600 for my replacement Andersen 45 S/tailers when I replaced 'em last year, i dont think there are any cheap ones around!.

Thanks but I am really looking for self tailers to replace some old Gibb winches - no one will tail for me!

A cheap(ish) alternative is to get a pair of winchers, rubber thingies that go on the top of non-ST winches. I found one to fit my little winches recently, and while I haven't tried it in anger yet, it seems to do the job when playing.

Winchers are unusual in that they are a cheap solution that really works. They won't tail for you, but they take a solid hold on the sheet, so taking away the need to cleat it off, and are incredibly useful if single-handing - they take all the stress out of a tack on a windy day. I used them happily for several years before buying a boat with self-tailers.
