Second hand carbs from the states

I recently tried to buy a pair of second hand solex side draught carbs for one of my Volvo aq 140a's from e bay in the states
item was paid for and delivery dates were set. At the time that they were due to arrive I get a message from e bay saying that my payment would be refunded ( which it was ) and the item could not be delivered due to UK import restrictions. OK so I contact the seller and he says he's been paid and the matter is closed. Further contact with e bay reveals that they cannot send because of their global shipping regulations and the item will be liquidated to cover their costs, I told them that I was travelling to the states ( last two weeks on holiday ) and could I purchase them and make my own arrangements. No response to that. Made a complaint to e bay and they enrolled me into their global shipping program!
WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON!!! Has anybody else had this problem surely if they can ship hundreds of cars all round the world they can manage my carbs.
 
Since 9/11 there has been all kinds of restrictions about shipping goods from unregistered vendors on passenger aircraft.

Don't know if this is related to the problem you are having.
 
any type of part that has fuel in it at any time is not sposed to be sent, the seller has caused this all he needed to do was to clear the fuel from the carbs wrap em properly
and put car part on the customs label ! he proberly put down what they were and some jobs worth went ooh err

Thanks guys you're probably right but you think that e bay would have alternative ways to ship cos I didn't care how long it took . plus I am pretty desperate as these carbs are like rocking horse droppings new or old in the uk

On Ebay I sold a 1930's wooden backed house phone to SA. I made the mistake of calling it a telephone at the post office and had to promise that it did not have an internal battery .......
 
Can you fit side draught Webers or Delortos instead? 40DCOE Webers are usually available secondhand and can be re jetted to suit.
