Is there any kind of trade guide for boat prices?

I'm interested in the moody 31 range but the prices being asked on the various brokers websites varies by a great deal. It's also difficult to build up an accurate picture of the prices as there are not that many for sale and their ages vary significantly making comparison even harder.

Also has anyone any firsthand experience as to whether the prices being asked for by the brokers and private sales being achieved.

After looking at the current prices of various boats it looks to me like the private sale boats are more expensive than the broker boats, any views?

Yachtworld.com lists about 15 31s and 5 S31 for sale, mostly through brokers. 31s vary between £30-40k and S31 between £40-50k with one or 2 above this. This is typical of the range of prices for an older boat that was built over a number of years.

There is not a buyers guide any more accurate than observation although brokers who subscribe to Yachtworld get access to actual sale prices reported by brokers.

Brokers asking prices are probably nearer actual achieved prices because they are more in tune with markets. Owners often overprice their boats, either because they don't know or they are not serious about selling. On the other hand a buyer can often do well privately because the seller does not have to pay commission.

Fortunately there are enough of this model available to be able to view a fair number to help you determine what is best for you. Also a number of forumites own them so you might get some "expert" responses.

Good hunting.

In case you don't realise, the 31 and the S31 (not '31S', there was no such thing) are totally different boats - the S31 has a different hull shape, different rig, deck layout, interior layout and different engine to the 31 Mks 1 and 2.
S31's were built between 1994 and 1998 and are therefore a lot newer than the 31 which was built 1983-1991. Also a lot scarcer than the 31, only 145 S31's were built compared with 305 of the 31 Mks 1 and 2.
I have an S31, it's a terrific boat. Interestingly the latest Beneteau Oceanis 31 which is 'Boat of the Year' this year and costs 80 grand has an identical layout down below to the Moody S31, but the latter's aft cabin is a lot better and as you might expect the whole thing was much more sturdily put together.
Up to recently a well-kitted S31 was still fetching 50K but it looks like sales have dropped off a bit if 5 are available. Bilge-keel versions seem to be rare on the market, though, so might fetch more than the fin version.

There is a wide range because the condition of the boats will vary considerably - we looked at 6 before we bought. You need to see a few to get the measure of it. Mk 2s will be more because they are newer. The differences are the sugar scoop stern and the forward facing nav table. These might not sound much but my friend with a MK I is dead jealous!

Wish I could afford an S31 like Cantata.

Me too, great rear cabin. Like Rodger we viewed 5 before selecting ours. The sugar scoop stern does make getting in and out of the dinghy a brease. 18 months after purchase we are really pleased with her /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif. Active owners Asso also very helpful as suggested by Richard.

E mailed a couple of reviews to your hotmail account.

Just to get the story right...we 'afforded' an S31 because in an idle moment in 'ampshire after looking at another boat we didn't like, we went to see the S31 with me thinking 'I do not want one of those' before we had even seen one.
That attitude was swiftly corrected by wifey who clambered down below, took one look round and said 'This is it'.
And so it was.
Affordability was an irrelevant challenge that somehow was overcome. One must always go with the flow.

Looking for a Moody 31 mk2 for my next boat.......I expect to pay about 35K for a 1990 version........you will see all prices asked for but at the end of the day its worth what you will pay for it!!

Prepare to spit feathers Cantata.....

I had a text message today from an American relative-in-law who is visiting England. He used to have a yacht. Anyway his question was "What model Moody do you have. Is it French?"

/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gifFRENCH! - you can hung for less than that /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I looked at about 7 or 8 M31's on East & South coast before I bought mine,& a couple of S31's .The price will reflect the maintenance & the goodies fitted as well as age of sails etc.Mine already had radar, electric windlass, diesel heating to name a few.The previous owners had spent 20k on updates & engine overhaul etc but I have still had new sails, stackpack, alternator system, canopy, fridge etc.Whatever you buy there is likely to be some extra costs.Good hunting.Just as an aside do not discount the Mk1 boats as apart from the sugar scoop & chart table(see above) they are the same as Mk2's.

Hi
You still looking for moody 31 mkII
I might know of one for sale in about 2 weeks.
Its needs tlc. New windows and sky lights etc due to uv light.
And needs revanishing in side. And prob a good polish too.
If you interested let me know. And how much you might be willing to pay.
If it goes on market ill let you know

If buying the M31 suggest that a wheel configuration is an excellent option than tiller steering, particularly if your lady does some steering/parking. Tiller versions do tend to get a bit heavy on both fin and twin keel versions at F3 +, whereas the wheel stays finger light yet positive in the same and stronger breezes.

did some boat hunting with a friend who bought a 31, I can confirm the quality, condition and inventory can vary considerably.(By at least as much as 10K's worth IMHO). So you've got to view really

Haggle, haggle and haggle some more. I don't know about Moodys but boats in general are tricky to shift, only the ones that are in good/top condition are selling once they have been well knocked down in price.

Research the market, note down prices, spec and how long they have been for sale, you can use the info to knock down the price. It's a really nice position being a buyer at the moment, take advantage of the poor market, don't be afraid of starting thousands below the asking, enjoy the cut and thrust of the haggle, you have the upper hand ;)
