hi, does anyone have any ideas/preferences on what type of covering material to use on boats. i have seen something like leather/suede on my mates mariah and like it but i dont know where to get it from.

the origional covers are cloth (oh and very orange!) so need to be changed as a priority.

all suggestions gratefully received. cheere, steve.

Got a brochure form a Dutch company at the METS show in Holland last month and I think the stuff you're after is called either Alcantara or Duratouch. Not cheap though. Alcantara is 140cm wide, costs €80 per linear metre and the Duratouch €50 per linear metre. Their phone no in Holland is 0031 120 6599523. There must be a supplier in UK, Toomer and Hayter or someone similar, you'll no doubt find one upstairs at Earls Court.

BTW I think you'd be better off posting this on the PBO forum,

I used draylon when recovering my seats last year - but don't go anywhere near someone who specialises in boat upholstery - too expensive. I had mine done by a conventional upholsterer 60 miles from the sea for about half the price!

Cheers

It is indeed Alcantara (synthetic suede), and can be obtained from Boyriven Ltd in Wembley, tel 020 8902 9581.
Last time I checked it was around £60/metre.
Just one comment though. I have it in my motor cruiser as a head lining and it looks a million dollars. However, the internal helmsmans seat is also covered in it, which gets a fair amount of use, and you can now see the wear, ie it has lost some of the nap in the high wear areas, but it IS very tough. It's about 14 years old now, so I suppose that's to be expected. How it would compare with Dralon, wear wise, I would'nt like to guess at?
Hope this helps
Stuart

Try and find a company that re-trim taxi or bus& coach seats. It will be very hard wearing and fire retardant and (hopefully) cheap.
